Silly question to some, but here goes....I am thinking of adding a microwave to my LQ. Does the microwave need to be "special" to run off my batteries? I have solar panels and always have enough juice for my furnace, waterpump, etc. And, if it needs to be specially made for RV use where do I purchase one?

I am not certain but it would surprise me if there were a microwave made that could run off of a battery....when we run ours it causes the generator to idle up.

I agree. You probably will need to fire up the Generator to run any microwave. Most Microwaves run on 1100-1200 watts or 110 volt power. Never seen one that will run on 12 volt systems

Okie Dokie - I kind of thought it required a generator - whick I don't have. Just the solar panels. GUess I will have to hest my food the old fashion way....with a gas stove! LOL

I run my 800 watt microwave using the batteries through the inverter. I use it to heat up coffee or quick meals - nothing that takes more than 3 or 4 minutes to heat up and the batteries last 2 of us all weekend. There is nothing special about my microwave except that I got it on a special 'back to college' sale at Target a couple years ago for $29!

I have seen a small 12 volt microwave at the truckstops. It's about half the size of a normal microwave, and looks pretty cheap. I guess if you only use it for small items, it may work for what you want. I don't remember the price though. I believe the brand was Road Pro, which you can find at most Pilot, Flying J, and Love's Truck Stops.
