As someone who has done this ride 3X, in all kinds of weather, I can not stress enough the importance of a well conditioned horse. I have personally witnessed tying up, colic, and horses that just could not continue. It is not a ride for horses younger than 5. The summer it was HOT was the worst.

We ride those mountains also. 19 yr old horse is not the issue, IF, he is in excellent shape. And gets along well with other horses flying past him. If he gets nervous, he's not a horse for this ride. He'll get too hot, and then you have real problems.
