I need to install safety chains on my trailer, it's a 96 and NEVER had any. Is one type better ( chain vs cable?) I want the clevis hook but I'm not sure on the length that I need. I'll have to drill a hole thru 1/4 inch plate. I'm not sure what size hardware I should use. Can anyone give me tips? I've searched the internet but usually find how to install s hook chains on boat trailers. Can someone post some pictures of how their chains are fastened?
Thank you, K

You can see where the safety chains will be attached in the following picture...notice the springs to pull the connections flat when not in use http://www.autoanything.com/GenericPages/ProductImage.aspx?GroupID=...

Just install some chains. Probably 5/16" or  3/8" chain would be sufficient.

Hooks  on the end to attach to your truck and either attach them with a bolt or chain coupler to your trailer.

Make them long enough that they don't become tight no matter what angle you have the truck/trailer.

There is a specific reqirement for trailer safety chains.   It is basically...

The strength rating of each length of safety chain or its

equivalent and its attachments shall be equal to or exceed in

minimum breaking force the GVWR of the trailer.

So if you have a 10,000 pound trailer each of two chains has to have a breaking strength of 10,000 pounds.

Be aware that chain is available in different strength classes or grades for each size.  Just like nuts and bolts.   Proof coil chain is the weakest.  Proof coil is what you'll get in the local hardware store unless you ask for different.

On page 3 of this PDF there is a table of chain strengths.  click here >> http://www.peerlesschain.com/downloads/Trailer_Safety_Chain.pdf

Since I haul earth moving equipment, I guess I just assume everybody buys Transport grade chains. Since that's the only type we purchase.

Thanks for the clarification
