Went out to pasture today and horse has a wound about the size of a silver dollar, hide still attached but pretty deep. The wound is just below the shoulder on the leg.  It has knotted and swollen up but doesn't seem to bother her too much.  I figured I would call the vet tomorrow but definitely not an emergency.  Have rinsed it out, planning to give a tetanus.  Just wanted to know the best way to triage the wound until tomorrow.  Any ideas appreciated.  I have also put her in her stall for the evening.  I figure the less movement the better.

I'd suggest washing it out very well with the hose and cold water. Then apply some iodine. Then if at all possible put some protective cover on it, to keep the dirt out.

Not a good idea to confine her in a stall. That will cause the swelling to get worse. The pasture with green grass is probably the best. If she stands around the swelling will get much worse.

Right now there is no green grass to be found in my neck of the woods mostly just dirt and dust.  Wasn't sure about covering it up so that it could continue to weep and keep wound clean.  Good point about the swelling though.

Def. give a tetanus. As long as it is not near any joints I would just watch it closely. I agree, leave her out. Is she lame?

No she isn't lame.  Doesn't really seem to bother her to put weight on it all.  It's right below the shoulder and is pretty swollen.  Vet came last night and gave tetanus, 3 shots of penicillin.  Said he would call it a puncture wound.  Giving her bute twice a day for inflammation and pain and washing it out twice a day for a week.  Hopefully we will be good to ride in a week or two.  This is prime season for us.  Missing out on a long weekend camping trip:( I have another horse to ride, but don't want to leave hurt one unattended.

I have been known to add human antibiotic ointment...triple antibiotic and vet has said it is OK when added to shots and oral antibiotic. hope you're back to the trail soon. JR's Pal
