I own a number of web halters some many years old. They are pretty dirty. What is the best way to wash these halters? I'm afraid the hardware would scratch up the washing machine.

Anyone have any experience or good ideas?

I put mine in a large bucket, like a muck bucket and fill it with warm water and tide laundry soap.  I use a hand scrub brush and scrub both sides of the halters,  then rinse them in another large tub of clean water and hang to dry. I ususally wash mine on a sunny breezy day and then hang to dry on the round pen.

Thanks for reports on washing web halters.

Re: The washing machine......
a. Doesn't it make a terrible racket?
b. Doesn't your washing machine get all scratched?

I'll be watching for the next warm day. I think the weather forecast is for in the 80's this week.

Thanks again.

I wash mine in a bucket of warm water with OxiClean...really works great, do lead ropes too. Then I rinse and put a little liquid fabric softener in the water and let them set awhile.(rinse well) This really softens up stiff old halters and lead ropes.

I put mine in a cotton bag and toss them into the washing machine. Hasn't damaged the machine yet!

The Oxiclean is great, use it myself. It also works well on white and blonde manes and tails, just mix it up and dip the tail in a bucket or pour/spray it on,and let it set.Really breaks down stains well.

I put mine in an old pillow case in the washing machine and use lots of hot water and Oxi Clean or something similar as well as regular laundry detergent. I also use an additional rinse cycle to make sure all the detergent is out. They come out looking pretty good!

How do you cloose the pillow case so the halters and leads don't fall out?

The washing machine sounds like the easiest cleaning method. I do put my fly masks in there but they don't have the heavy metal buckles.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I use a power washer. Gets the deep down dirt out. Makes them look good as new.

We soak ours in a bucket with Dreft baby softener, rinse, then put them in the dishwasher. They come out like brand new!

I use a rubber band or pony tail holder to close the pillow case. You could probably even use a zip tie or twisty bag tie.
