I've heard that if you wean your colts at a certain time when the moon is right, weaning time goes better. Has anyone tried this? Ive never had any trouble weaning colts, but if the time (whenever that is) makes things go smoother I'm all for it. So when is the right time to wean by the moon? My colts will be 4 months at the end of July.

Try Farmer's Almanac online. I did this and liked the results, but it was my first colt so I have no basis on comparison. I know my vet believes in it.

My friend gelds her colts and castrates her cattle by the moon. When my neighbor and I both had colts and use the same vet I just followed the time he had scheduled. Both our boys got so sick and felt so bad that I committed to always going by the moon in the future when I neuter an animal.

I've always weaned colts/calf's by the moon signs, just make sure that the signs are going down the leg>>> NOT coming up, I use when the signs are in the knees going toward the feet as my forecasted weaning date........good luck and Happy Trails

I have a friend in WI, that breeds Paints and miniature cattle, and she always weans her colts and calves by the dark of the moon...She swears by it...

I can give you the right dates if you say what month for sure you want to wean them, the signs are the signs of the zodiac that have the most influence over regions of the body. I don't know anything about it except we go by the farmers almanac recommendations that are handily already on our calender, based on the signs as mentioned. Works well so far....

forgot to add this>>>>>>>>the signs go up the body and back down during the month, if you can catch the signs going from the knees to the feet is supposed to be the prime time to wean. Look on a almanac calender and it should show a pic of a body and what region the sign is in for that period..........good luck

I just happened to read this thread last night. I was able to find the Almanac saying yesterday and today were good days to wean. I was wondering why I was having such good luck with a colt that had it's Mom taken away from it yesterday morning. The colt did great and is even better today! It has been a long time since I weaned a colt and I was unsure about how it would go. It went great!

I'm glad you had good luck... I never really did figure it out. Must have gotten on the wrong site or something. I went ahead and weaned mine the last weekend in July. They both weaned really well and are doing great.
