2oz skin so soft---4oz cider vinegar----6oz blue dawn dish soap----8oz cinternola oil(torch fuel) mix in quart sray jug fill with water.
We have used this for at least 10 years we don't use anything else.

The recipes I have read use 1 C skin so soft 1 Cup water
This was off a National parks service web site so I am guessing it is for human use. It is not working that that well on horses so I am thinking of trying the citronella fuel instead and I have also added white vineager.

We have also used this recipe, but bought the Citronella oil in a small bottle at the local pharmacy. I spilled some of that "torch fuel" citronella on a pair of jeans, it dried, didn't know it, went riding..well, after 20 minutes in the saddle my legs were kinda scalded/burned from the torch fuel, so not using that on my horse either. I have had very good luck with this recipe, only added a minced up clove of garlic, and used the green Palmolive dish soap. Kinda makes my horses smell like a "salad" but works. You can also add just a ounce or two of PineSol. Doesn't irritate horse's skin, but keeps deer flies and turkey mites away. Good luck with whatever recipe you use.!

I was just mixing up some fly spray, looking up different recipes online, to see if my recipe was good enough .... WARNING: The citronella torch fuel is "only" citronella scented.....plus, it is petroleum based, so if you spray on your horse, get out in the hot sun, burning of his hide could happen....plus it's flammable! so.....used pure Citronella Oil(get at pharmacy, etc.)....safer for your horse and you! There are a bunch of recipes, with just a little different ingredients....just google "horse fly spray recipes"
