Has anyone ever heard of "MAG" for dust control in indoor riding arenas?  It's actually Magnesium Choloride... sounds great, but I can't find much information on it.  Just looking for an honest opinion from someone who has actually used it before I spend the money.  Thanks!

We've had the same dust problem, and through the advise of Farmbabe, we spread Calcium Chloride in our arena. It lasted a season and worked well. We will shortly be applying this season's coating, as the arena is now again being used often.

Gard - what kind of footing do you have in your indoor?  We have a sand/rubber mixture.  Again, just trying to compare.

According to the information I've found, Magnesium Chloride is safer for the horses, less harsh, etc. but gets you the same results as the Calcium Chloride.

Besides being tired of watering a few times a week, we also have a well so I'm hoping this is a good alternative!  Thanks for your response!

Once the CC is watered down its safe to ride in. Most horses are not standing in the arena 24/7 so for the time a horse is actually in the arena I have never noticed any ill effects of CC on the horses hooves. CC can be purchased at just about any hardware store since its used around homes and farms.

We have a river bottom sand mix. I read where masonry sand is rough on hooves, and bought this instead. When mixed with manure, it becomes very dusty. We turn out a different horse every night in the arena. While using the CC, the horses have experienced no hoof or health related problems.

At one of our local state parks, East Fork, there was some masonry sand donated for use on the trails. It has some kind of chemical added to it to keep the dust down, but it has caused some serious skin irritation around the hooves and bottom of the legs to the point where the hair falls off if exposure to it is prolonged. It also can speed up infection if it gets in cuts and scrapes.

The local horsemans clubs are trying to cover it up/dig it out because of this.

Something to keep in mind/an eye out for.
