Hi I have been lurking here for a long time and decided to actually log on and introduce myself and ask my first question. My name is Melissa and I live in Northernish Utah, have a 11 yr old big Morgan gelding and I am horse crazy. My question is: has anyone on here tried a Mikmar bit? They look very interesting and I am really curious about them but before buying I would like references. So any one tried them or know anyone who has?

Once thing I want to add about any bit- they are not the cure-all. Some horses might be more comfortable or perhaps do better in a good fitting bit thats appropriate for the occasion but it won't solve training issues. I use different bits on different horses but not to fix a training problem.

My friend bought a new Mikmar bit. Used it a for about a month and sold it. No bit is the cure all as has been said on this forum. Proper training of the horse and the rider is. The popular clinicians on RFD don't require Mikmar bits.

Thanks for the comments, I guess my horse just needs more consistent time spent on him. He had 2 years off due to illness (mine not his) and he is acting a little headstrong. I think I need to restart and reteach him some respect. Painted horse I trail ride, hunt, no show. I Thanks again!

I bought horses because I got tired of hauling elk off the mountain on my back. I soon learned that i needed to ride them more often than a week or two in October. I don't show and have no interest in any arena work. Horses for me are a way to travel across land that I can't cross any other way except on horse or foot.
So I trail ride as much as possible all year to keep my horses in shape and willing to work. I ride a lot up in Ogden Valley during the summer in the evenings to get some miles under the saddle. Weekends I like to go a little farther and ride a little higher on the mountain. Strawberry is a favorite for saturday rides.
