I bought a used trailer with two known issues, one of which was broken awning springs. I have spent many hours searching the net about how to replace them, what to buy, etc. It is a 20 ft awning and yesterday I rolled it down for the first time to look for some numbers on the awning, I rolled it up by hand and it took about 30 seconds is all, there must still be some spring tension becuase it was VERY easy to do...it didn't wind up automatically but did with very little help. It appears that it will cost at least a couple hundred bucks to get this fixed, anything wrong with doing it by hand? Do I run a risk of it getting stuck in the out?

Answer to question #1, they aren't very hard to roll up by hand, but maybe yours just needs tightening. Look up A&E or Carefree website to see intructions for putting more tension in the springs. If it is truely broken, then you should here it flopping/clunking when you roll it up.
Answer to question #2 I have a friend that has been rolling his up by hand for several years, there isn't anything in there that would prevent it from rolling up by hand as long as the locking/unlocking mechanism is still functioning.

The spring in my awning broke about 3 or 4 years ago and I have been rolling it up by hand since then. We were going to have it fixed but it's not been a high priority until I have to roll it up. I just take a good tall foot stool with me as I'm quite short.
