I have a Honda 3000 generator, not the super quiet model but still quiet in comparision to other generators.  I just bought a Honda 2000i from CL this morning for $400 with very few hours...very excited about my find.  Thinking of selling the 3000 and getting a second 2000 but want to make sure I understand something.  Is sound additive?  In otherwords if I am running two generators at 60db do I have a total of 60db or does it start to get louder?  I know it wouldn't be 120db but does it get to 65 or 70 and defeat the purpose of having a super quiet generator?

Mike

Doing logarithmic problems at my age is asking for problems. I did find these two sites though. First one, http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/adding-decibel-d_63.html  would suggest two 60db devices would create a sound power level of 63db, or a gain of 3db.

The second site, http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-levelchange.htm appears to show a 1.23 fold(increase) in volume loudness. Hope this helped.

I have two of the 2000i Hondas and the noise increase is minimal. Should you decide two buy a second one be sure you get the Companion Model. They make hookup much easier

Would also suggest you consider purchase of an extended run gas tank. For more information see www.wisesales.com

Good question and I would also like to know the answer to this just because I purchased two 2000 watt generators that you can hook up together. We do have a big generator but its heavy and mom can't move it by herself and has been wanting a new one.

Generator shopper !

I'm currently shopping for an inverter generator to run the a/c.  Sound levels are the major consideration after price.  After hearing both the Honda and the Yamaha in operation, subjectively, the Yamaha was louder.  Yet specs say it's less 57 vs 58 dB.

Last night I figured the reason...  The levels are measured at RATED output.

So if the a/c unit is drawing 2000 watts it's 2000/2400 or 83% for the Yamaha vs 2000/3000 or 67% of rated load for the Honda.

The Honda is quieter.

So would the Yamaha EF3000iseB (rated at 51-57) be quieter than the 2400 watt inverter genset....?

I have two 2000i Hondas hooked together and you can barely tell the difference when they are both running or if I am just using one. They also have what is called an eco throttle that makes them even quieter yet if you don't need full power. I have been extremely happy with my Hondas. With the parallel kit, they are extremely easy to run one or both. I also love the fact that I can pick them up with one hand.

Retento.  I was comparing the Honda EU3000iSA and the Yamaha EF2400iSHC.

The Honda specs: 49dB @ 1/4 load; 58 @ rated load

Yamaha specs: 53dB @ 1/4 load;  58 @ rated load

Depending on the noise/load curve of the Yamaha EF3000iseB ... I would say it would be quieter than the 2400.

Another point:  I can't find the distance from the generator when sound is measured for either.  I have seen the figure of 7 meters (21 feet) used by several other gen sets.

I think that 21' number is what the National Parks Service uses...
