Wondering what works on a horse tail. Top of tail has bristles(broken hair). We

have tried conditioner and oils. Don't know what else to try? The rest of the tail

 is long and nice looking.

Make sure the horse is up to date on worming as that can cause them to rub their butts. Otherwise, the MTG is good but I think the main thing is to keep the area clean. Not only the tail hairs but the area underneath as well. Some horses have allergies to bugs and will rub their tails but you may not have that issue where you live. I've also had good luck using Healthy Hair Care's conditioning product and an occasional spray with Vetrolin Shine. When they scratch, they don't tend to break the hairs as easily. The Healthy Hair Care is water based and not drying at all. It also is not slippery and doesn't tend to attract dirt. Diligence is the key. You must keep after it.

I like MTG as well. You may want to check for tick infestation and dirty sheath or udders. one of ours is super sensitive to tick bites ans will rub against anything to relieve the itching. I have heard of using Listerine gold (somewhat diluted) but I am not sure of the mixture (sorry, not much help).

Good luck

It is Shapley's MTG (mane, tail groom).  It is a mixture of various things and is an all purpose liquid remedy.  Should be able to find it at your local feed store, co-op or Tractor Supply store.  It is also available from several catalogues.....horse.com  valleyvet.com and others.  If you wear any silver jewelry, be sure to take it off before using the MTG.

Our old roping horse does this every year in warmer weather. Vet says could be these little mites/bugs that infest their tail (can't really see them). There is a homemade recipe for this(also works on sweet itch) made with Gold Bond powder and some other ingredients. Lost the recipe, but google it and see what happens. MTG is the best for just about every itch, scratch, new hair growth, etc. Awesome stuff!!~~~ I also agree, it's that time of year to clean his sheath, even tho it's a nasty job, this works with our gelding too. He scratches/rubs  his tail, cuz he can't scratch the "other itch"! He would rub his tail till it bled, but that Gold Bond concoction really works! Good luck~

Hey! Found a great website with that recipe for sweet itch, etc.(They even say to use Prep-H for proud flesh!! Who would have guessed that one!!) This site has a lot of recipes for horsey skin, wound, etc. problems! Great!

Ive used the gold bond medicated powder on my horse's tail. I usually buy the dollar store brand of powder (It's still in a gold bottle and red cap) and use that directly on the tail, rub it down to get to the skin, and even under the tail. I don't mix anything, and it's not oily to attract more dust and gunk. It seems to be somewhat effective so far. But if it's the mites, other remedies might be better. It's worth a buck or two to try though!
