I have decided my pal needs a new pad for Christmas.He cannot go with felt, wears him to the bone.I have learned that a nice fleece pad is just the right thing for him.I was considering the Professional Choice Wrangler pad.Has anyone tried these pads?Are they more hype than value?I know I can get another Josey Fleece pad from Chicks.Any thoughts?

I recently switched to the "Skito" pad and I love it. You can get it with the 100% wool fleece underside. The inner pads come out and you can throw the shell in the wash. It is wonderful. The inner pads can be rinsed as well. I went with the dry back type. It is pricey but should last a really really long time. You can order it to fit any saddle type. There are many color choices as well.

I hated those skito pads. They're hype in my opinion. If you are looking for a nice fleece pad I believe there are some tolkat brand ones that a lot of endurance riders use. The Christ Lamfelle pads are more english style (I don't know if you ride english or western) but their wool fleece pads are amazing. Also, the professional's choice air ride pads have a fleece bottom. I was happy with the one i had....but sold it with a saddle.

Yes I ride western and trails. That is pretty much all I do. I have a Circle Y flex II saddle. I always purchased contoured pads just because they fit well. The PFC HD pad are not contoured so I am just curious what the effects will be. It seems to me that PFC is marketing these pads primarily for Show and Barrels. Not to say the color choices are horrid. But they do indicate in some reviews that they provide exceptional support.

I love the Toklat wool back pad and cool back pads. They both wick away sweat to keep the horses back cooler. Both can be laundered and will come out of the wash looking like new again with plenty of plush puff.

I'm just curious on the felt pads - what do you mean by wears him to the bone? And can you tell me what brands you tried? I'm just nosey ... am *thinking* it is one of the brands that has very little virgin wool in them, which in turn makes it contain alot of synthetics (which is alot of plastic fibers too) & maybe that is rubbing him?

The Diamond Wool pads have very little virgin wool in them - they are loaded w/synthetic fibers & are "needled" wool. I have been using a toklat coolback fleece pad on my Arab mare training for LD rides. She gets sore if I try to use a gel or felt pad cause I think too much is compressing and pressure is soreing.
Look at Toklats on the Action Tack webpage they explain it better than I do.
