My wife and I are planning a non horse involved trip, to Michigan's UP area from PA. I was wondering if anyone familiar with the area, could recommend scenic spots and must things to do. We have no itinerary, just plan on driving for a week or so, and taking in as much as we can. Any ideas? Thank you.

I live about 2 hours south of the bridge. Been to the UP many times.I'd go to mackinac island,the fort,and the City of mackinaw ( there is also a nice fort there too) head on up to Tahquamenon Falls State Park http://www.exploringthenorth.com/tahqua/tahqua.htmlits really nice.There is also the Soo Locks in Soo Sainte Marie http://www.soolocks.com/index.phtmlThe boat tour is also a fun thing to do. If you have a passport, cross the bridge into Canada there is a bush pilots museum we enjoyed. http://www.bushplane.com/Thats just a small sampling of places to go north of the bridge.

Thank you for the travel info and because we do have passports, we had hoped to hit Canada if time allowed. We'll be traveling in a couple of weeks; hopefully it won't be snowing by then.
I also wanted to thank you for your previous posting, about using calcium chloride to reduce the dust in our arena. We removed many tons of ground up sand, spread the chloride and watered heavily. The surface stayed moist for about three weeks and the dust was mostly eliminated. Re watering produces the same affect. It has greatly enhanced the indoor riding comfort.

Glad the CC worked. Although its not cheap it does work. have a great vacation in the UP. Another place is Drummond island http://www.drummondislandchamber.com/ My husband and I enjoy taking the bike to the UP for day drives. Its scenic, not too far away but far enough to "go" somewhere.

Farmbabe...you gave some good info. No, it won't be snowing in two weeks when you guys get here.....Although, some years have been a little close. Enjoy your visit. Michigan has some beautiful scenery to offer. I live in lower Michigan so I am considered to be a troll......imagine that. There are alot of horse trails up there as well. Some friends of ours just came back and said it was a beautiful place to ride. These same people have been to Illinois, Arizona, Colorado etc. so it says something.....

My husband & I just came back from the UP. We went to Mackinaw (Mackinac) Island. It was great. We took a ferry to the island, which by the way only allows horses & bicycles as transpotation, no motorized vehicles. We went around the lake on bicycles, but you can take horse drawn carriages too. Search it on google! Have fun

I realize this trip has probably come and gone already by several weeks but I just wanted to add that if you ever return to the UP you should visit Munising and the Pictured Rocks. Hike the shoreline if you get the chance or else take the shoreline cruise out of Munising, you won't regret it.

We made the trip and did exactly as you suggested. Munising, the boat trip and Pictured Rocks were outstanding. We had perfect weather and enjoyed all of the non commercialized MI we could. We enjoyed the maritime influence, as well as the agriculture, forests and natural beauty. It differs greatly from the stereotype of Detroit, Flint, manufacturing and concrete that is commonly thought of when MI is discussed.

Hey,I've been searching for years for ways to reduce arena dust so got quite intrigued when I read Gard's post about calcim chloride. Isn' that salt? How does it work in your arena? Where do you buy it and is it toxic if the hroses ingest it?

You can buy CC in bags from most hardware/feed stores.some peopel use it to weigh down tractor tires for the winter since it doesn't freeze. CC by the bag is in a power/flake form and you soak into the dirt with plenty of water so there is no harm of ingesting it. The more water the better. Its not cheap ( we paid $15 bucks a bag and that was a few years ago) but it does last and if the arena can be rewatered you can add more over the winter but thats some thing I cannot do. After a while, it tend to bind the dust and can last several months depending on how much you use and how often you use the arena.
