I have a 6 year old mare.She hasn't been ridden in 3 weeks.Saterday morning another gal let her grandaughter ride her and they went on a short trail ride walk only! I went to see my mare saterday afternoon and all four legs were stocked up? She had no cuts or scrapes. Her legs appered to be clean other than the stocking up? She is also not lame or sore on them.She was standing in the stall all day.In which she does every day.Then she goes out at night.She has never had this before..So should I just wait it out or call the vet?She is acting normal in every way?Do you think that something in the field or something she ate may have caused it?Why would all 4 stock up evenly?

I have had this happen in a couple of horses. One, a mare that I have will stock up if she eats straight alfalfa...she just gets puffy on the lower rear legs. It goes away of its own accord. The other is my gelding who will stock up on all fours, just as your mare did, after a distance ride wearing easy boots. Kind of wierd, but he doesn't do it if I don't use the boots. It goes away on its own and will go away faster if the horse moves around. I wouldn't worry too much. Are you sure they only walked?

Thanks for the advice.I am just going to watch it for the rest of the week.If it doesn't go away by the end of the week I will give the vet a call.
I am sure they walked.It was her grand daughters first trail ride and they only ride once a year when they come for a few weeks in the summer.

The stocking up should go away within 20 minutes of hand walking her. Is there a reason she can't be put in a paddock during the day and out in the pasture at night? That would greatly help with your issue.
