Have you seen the ads featuring the new mosquito repellant clip-ons by OFF? They are made for humans, but I tried them on my horse last evening. Clipped one on his halter and another one on the tail of his fly sheet. Worked like a charm! No mosquitoes and no biting flies! I sat out there with him for over an hour and I didn't get bitten either. They are a little expensive for everyday use, but I'll bet they would be a lifesaver when camping in the woods with your horses.

We used the cattle ear tags with tick repellant on the horses halters when we lived in S. Tx. We had a huge problem with ticks in the ears before my vet recomended using them. They worked great, we used zip ties to secure them so they would break off it they got caught on the misquite/brush.

West Nile virus has been a real cause for concern around here for the last few years. I lost three parrots to the disease before I recognized the problem. My mother contracted the virus and nearly died, so mosquito control is a real issue with me. My animals are all vaccinated every year and I plant lots and lots of citronella around the barns and house to repel the little monsters. I also encourage finches, sparrows, and swallows to nest around the property. Something is working! Or maybe the drought just keeps them from breeding so profusely. Anyway, not nearly as many as in years past.

There was a review on TV the other night about the various mosquito repellants. Including the little clip on one you reference. It didn't far well in the review. Infact they place a different brand of repelant on different people and sent them into a test room filled with mosuitos. The person with the clip on came running out almost immediately because the mosquitos attacked her som hard. Those with Deet and Skin so Soft stayed in the room.

Don't know anything about the comparison. All I know is that they worked for me taht one evening. Haven't needed to use them since.

Spent some (hard earned) money this week on the bug repellent leg and neck bands for my two horses... an older and very quiet mare and a 10 yr old gelding who has a penchant for mischief. The leg bands seem to be staying put, but both of the neck bands have already broken and I only put them on the "kids" on Tuesday afternoon. They were quite expensive and I hoped they would keep the flys away from their faces - they wear fly masks anyway, but the masks seem to have flies landing all over them. Well, I'm going to have to figure out a way to make these things work. I don't think Valley Vet will take them back.
I may sew up a sleeve of thin cotton cloth and enclose the strips in the sleeve then add some velcro to see if I can make them stay. Any other ideas???

The strip is made of vinyl about 1 1/4 inches wide and long enough to go around the horses neck. It has several sets of heavy duty snaps so you can adjust the tightness. Unfortunately, the vinyl seems to rip easily. I tried taping it back together with electrical tape, but it came apart again. There doesn't appear to be anyplace on the strip where I could attach a string. I think it's too heavy to stay securely braided in. Thought if I could create a sleeve the length and width of the strip with velcro on each end, it might not rip apart as easily as the vinyl, yet the velcro would allow it to come off if caught on something. My "kids" are not hard on their clothing... I don't have many problems with blankets or fly masks. I'm disappointed this product does not hold up better.
