Anyone had any issues with the Strangles Intranasal vaccine? I have a 6 year-old mare. 21 year-old mare and 11 year-old gelding that goes to lots of trail rides where I either use stalls or outside pens.

I have never vaccinated for strangles before due to the complications of the intramuscular vaccine. And I have never had a case of strangles on my farm, but there have been several out breaks in the KC area recently. I'm concerned about bringing home the disease and spreading it to my geriatric horses not to mention the risk to the horses that I take to the horse camps.

I have read several articales on the net and there are pros and cons to the vaccine, so I am still torn between taking a chance and giving the vaccine in hopes that the horses do not suffer complications from the vaccine.

We have been using this vaccine for the last 5 or so years and have not had any reactions to it. We haul alot and used to haul to alot of barrel races and stall in barns that I'm sure have had lots of sick horses in them. We are now mainly hauling to trail ride but still our horses are exposed to lots of stuff and luckily we have not had anybody come down with strangles. I can't say for sure how good the vaccine is, maybe we've just been lucky but it has to provide some immunity. I won't use the injectable as it is just too risky. Also if you use this vaccine be sure that if you are going to give any other shots that you give this last and be sure and thoroughly wash your hands. It is a live virus and if it gets on a needle and gets injected your horse will probably be very sore and abcess. Some horses are a little hard to get the little tube in their nose and you have to be careful it doesn't get caught in the flap in the nose.

I've used the internasal for many years on all 4 of my horses and never had any problems.

FD strangles IN vaccine killed my TWH gelding. And my friend's stallion as well.

IMHO...this is one vaccine that I would skip.

Good luck!

I have used it for several years, the first time I vaccinated with it, my horse developed several small lumps under her neck.  They went away, and it never happened again. I've heard that if your horse gets strangles once, they're immune to it, or at least not likely to get it again.  I'd say if you're worried that the vaccine will hurt your horse, then don't use it.  MOST people have no problem, otherwise the vaccine would have been removed from the market.

The intranasal vaccine is a good thing if you will be hauling and exposing your horses to various germs.  I had a strangles epidemic several years ago and it was very, very bad.  This is something you want to avoid if possible.  Suggest you contact your vet about the pros and cons of vaccinating.

Been using it a long time on many horses. Before they leave here and around other horses or another barn etc.or go to a trainer I use it.Never a issue.I sold two at Tattersauls one year and folks called me two weeks later and they both came down with strangles. If I had brought one or both home or bought one I would have had a issue here at home I'm sure.So up the nose it goes from then on.
