when you guys are primitive camping, do you leave your water pump turned on all the time or just when you need the preasure.  I would assume that the pipes would last better if they did not have preasume in them all the time.

If we are at the trailer, it's on.  If we are away from the trailer, it's off.  Reason being, if we are there and a leak pops up, I can take of it.  If we are gone, we might come back to a flooded trailer and an empty holding tank.

I leave mine off except when I need it. Sometimes I will leave it on for a while while I am in the trailer, but usually turn it off when not in use.

I've often wondered the same thing. Thanks for asking the question Ncatanz, and thanks also to those of you who responded. Ok...what about when you're hooked up to electric? Same thinking?

We turn the pump off when we're not using it. When we're on battery power it's a waste. There's nothing more aggravating, than to just fall asleep and have the pump cycle. It takes such a short time to repressurize the system when you need the water pressure, that it's not worth keeping the system pressurized all the time. If a faucet were left partially open, and you were gone all day, you might come back to an empty water tank and a dead battery.

How is turning off/on the pump full different than being hooked up to water at the faucet? If your trailer is going to leak, then it shouldn't matter if you are on the pump or faucet. Am I missing something here?

The only difference between the two is if your pump cycles, you have to listen to it, and it uses 12v every time it cycles. You are right, it is going to leak either way, but the original question was without hook ups.

The only time my pump is on...is when I am using the water. Otherwise, it's off. I would hate to return to my rig and find a busted pipe and water in the rig.

Why risk it?

It's easy to turn on the pump when you need it.

Water Pump and Hot water are both the same we only turn them on when we need them.  Hot water 15 - 30 min before use in the summer is sufficient for a hot shower.

Fridge we run on propane from home and back again.

The big change I made last year was I added a third Battery for the electric jack and back up to the house.  We run the house standard on the other two batteries.

If we are on shore power I shut the batteries off.

When I get to go I leave it on while in the trailer, turn it off at night and when we are away. When the other half goes with her friends she has a long list of things to turn on and off and I tell her to turn it off as soon as she is done with it at that time. Then the next time she calls and tells me "the water an't working" well no s*** turn the pump back on! Then I get oh'yeah I forgot about the list....
