For Christmas my husband bought me a SPOT. This is a GPS device that can be used anywhere in the world for rescue, or for asking help, or even just checking in with others to let them know you are ok. You do have to pay for the service but for those who like to roam outside of cell service it could be a lifesaver (quite literally). It's been out for a little over a year but I just recently heard of it and thought I might share with everyone here.

You bet! For riders, hikers, hunters, anyone out in the natural world, it has the ability to do just as described, and if you need rescue you don't have to be able to talk, just push 2 buttons. You can arrange to just let others know you are fine, and where you are on GoogleEarth, or ask for non rescue help, just for your selected people that it contacts to come to your location, for something non life threatening, but still could use some help. This is a great device. You got a great present!!!!

I saw the SPOT in the valley vet supply castalog... Along with a regular GPS, it is on my needs list... I think it's a great idea....If I go to Fort Stanton,NM this year (like I'm hoping) I'd feel better knowing that SOMEONE could find me if something went wrong.
