Nothing to catch fire, really. Tornado or flood even less probable, if I go by the fact that my house is 53 years old and hasn't been hit by a tornado yet. I guess it's always a 50/50 chance, though...either it gets hit or it doesn't. Accident is the most probable causes of loss by far, with theft coming in a distant second, but the insurance would only cover the trailer if it were my fault or the other driver didn't have insurance. We've got under $7k in the trailer and paid cash for it. That's about two and a half years of premiums at the rate I was quoted. I'm having a hard time justifying it, especially since the thing is not a necessity. It would hurt to lose it for sure, and it would take me a long time to replace it. Tough call, really. I guess I should shop rates some more.

I have USAA which is only available to Military and retired officers (my dad is a ret Air Force Colonel) it's A++ rated (considered the best insurance company in the world) it is vital that your insurance company have a B or better rating - can look in the Bests Key Rating Guide and it's probably available online.
I looked up a few of the companies mentioned on here:
Farm Bureau has several different companies - but all appear good as they have A+, A, and A- ratings
same with Allstate
State Farms has some A++, A+, A, A- and B
I have a friend who's 2H BP aluminum trailer was stolen from her yard and have heard of several other ones in South Fla stolen, so it can be an issue.

Towfoo- Yes by all means shop around. $280 for comprehensive seem fairly high for comprehensive, My house has been here for 55 years also with no tornados. Hail, straight line wind wind, trees, lightning yes. no one could steal it except over your dead body? What makes you think you would be there at the time? I spent 18 years in the insurance business (4 as a claims adjuster and the rest with my own sales agency). I saw to many time where some one didn't have coverage or inadequate coverage because they didn't want to spend the money up front Give up something you don't need once a month and pay the insurance!.

So the question has yet to be answered, what nat'l companies are there that will insure just the horse trailer? I am in a pickle since we have renters ins with Allstate but they wont insure the trailer since we dont have a auto policy with them. My auto policy (Safeco) wont insure it because of the "tier" Im in???? And if they did it would be $1100 a year! We are moving to TN next week and need to get ins on our lq's before we go.

Thanks for all the replies and lively banter ya'll......I've got some good ingo to go on.....now my next hurdle, living in Hurricaneville Florida. Heck, I pay $4,000 a year just to insure a 3/2 house with 5 acres!!!

Good points, genebob. I'd rather be covered than not, of course. I just need to find some reasonable rates, and my carrier doesn't have them, apparently. Heck, my homeowners isnt even as high as the comprehensive quote they gave me. I'll keep on shopping.

Funny this should come up I just did some compairing last week. I presently have mine with Farmers Ins. Group I think they are the third largest Insuror. They do theirs differently than State Farm and Farm Bureau, they Insure the trailers as a rider on your truck policy. I have a 2005 F350 Crew cab 4X4 King Ranch and have a 97 Hart alum bumper pull valued at 7500 and a 2005 Hart 3H with 12 ft Outlaw valued at 50,000 The truck and trailers and this is full coverage 100 ded comp and 500 ded collision for truck and trailers is $355 every 6 months. State farm was $322 for truck and $36 every 6 mo for the bumper and 499 a year for the LQ. Haven't heard back from Farm Bureau yet but I know they do theirs seperate like State farm.

I'm moving out of Florida! I have three vehicles....2 pickups and a van...all over 5 years old. No accidents/citations/etc and I'm paying $2000.00 a year!!! ARRRGHH

Don't move to GA. I have two vehicles, no tickets, no citations etc and my insurance is $1600 + per year. My horse trailer insurance is NOT included in this!! I know I need to shop around cause this is riduculous. I have used Allstate since I was 16 years old and it is time to look around!!

Yeah, there is no loyalty factor anymore...kinda sad. But with the higher prices of EVERYTHING....especially fuel (I'm paying $4.00/gallon for diesel), you got to continually shop around. This horse thing is gettin' real spensive!!!!

You bet it is.I kind of wish now we'd waited because I feel there will be some good deals,unfortunately for sellers,come up on trailers especially large ones.But if we could predict this happening,heck,we would'nt need good deals,right?

Longears we must have bought our trailers at the same place...I have Eqipment Ins. also and pay $280 each year...must be Texas also because when I shopped arund for this last fall I could not get the same coverage any less. All I found did not have theft included. And here in Johnson/Tarrant County they are stealing trails like mad right now...

I also have Equipment Insurance as my carrier. I just shopped around, and no one could beat their price. I just lowered the insured value since the trailer is now 8 years old.
By the way, Progressive told me they wouldn't insure the trailer unless they carried the car/truck too.

Does ya'lls insurance cover contents on trailers without LQ? Everyone I've talked to in Florida says they will cover liability while towing...then some will cover theft of trailer/fire/etc when it is unhooked and parked. But the agents always say the contents (tack) is not insured......and if I want to insure the contents, it will be an extra policy for about $500.00. Even though I maybe have $4500 total if I added all my tack and stuff up. What gives???

I have Citizens...which is a "State of Florida" derivative, formed after all the Hurricanes made the Thieving Insurance companies have to pay out a little money. It was fine to collect premiums....but don't ask them to pay. Now the entire insurance industry in Fl is melting down....nobody wants to insure you...and if they do, it'll cost you BIG TIME. Just some advice to anyone thinking of moving to Florida.....Don't!!! I was born and raised here...fifth generation, and it's turned into a non insurance covering, ultra-litigious, scum hole. Thanks for letting me vent

My trailer insurance covers the tack room contents too. Of course we have everything covered with Farm Bureau so either way it would be covered by the same company.

burner- Are you talking about a LQ. Most companies cover it under an RV policy where contents are covered. If not, a regular homeowners policy may not cover your tack, but probably would be under a farm policy.

No LQ...just 3 horse Featherlite with tack room.....I only have three acres...no one will write a "farm policy".....and homeowners will not cover, according to all of the agents I've spoken to....State Farm/Allstate/ and now Farm Bureau.

Wow!! That's expensive. I have my trailer insured through State Farm and I also have a seperate rider through State Farm for all of my tack. I have about $ 15,000 in tack insured and it costs $ 240.00 per year. They did require that I list each piece of tack separately, so any time I add something new that's of value, I have to contact them and add it. They will cover only what is on the list.

I have a 4 horse featherlite with a dressing room and is covered under the truck for liability, but I also have comprehensive (full coverage) on it. Liability only coveres the other guy. We are near the border and no one checks the insurance of border crossers (big problem here) so if you are hit by one or hit by someone with out or under insured you are just out of luck. I've got $14,000 replacement coverage and its $230 a year.

I think it is a really good idea to get it all with one company, you get discounts for doing that anyway. You are right stating that your homeowners covers your tack, just be sure you have a HOMEOWNERS policy and not a dwelling policy because there is a big difference. If you are renting I don't think your renters policy covers it and if you don't have a renters policy your are screwed.
