Can anyone recommend a lock that I can put  on the gooseneck hitch on our trailer?? A $90,000 horse trailer got stolen the other day in a few towns over and got me thinking that I need to invest in one. Can't find one for a goosneck at the local TSC.

There was a fellow on here that had a trailer stolen from East Fork in Tenn.

I have forgotten his name but he can tell you ALL about it,and the best way to ensure no one will steal your trailer.

He advised me to purchase a wheel lock,and several other things,but,he said the wheel lock is the safest.Wish I could remember his name?Maybe he'll see this thread and show up.

down about the middle of the page, locks both the coupler and covers and locks the set screws...

I already have one like the lock inside the bottom of the coupler pictured.So,all I need is the one over the set screw? I looked at that,but it's hard to picture just how that secures over the coupler without going around it somehow.

What are you going to do in the case of not having a crank handle? Lots of big trailers with LQ have either an electric or hydraulic jack on them.

Rentento,I may come off sounding dumb,but not being a thief I have never figured out how the H--- dropping the GN hitch of an 8000#+ trailer into a "spare tire/rim" and pulling it around would even WORK! THat's not going to hold an 8K trailer in the bed of a truck,it would jerk the tailgate off the truck,how would you even begin to make a turn with it,and expect the thing to follow?I'm sorry,but I never have got this picture after hitching up a GN trailer and all that it takes.It rotates on the ball,but,in a spare tire and rim?

Besides,if you had a ball in the bed of the truck,why would you even need a spare tire/rim to swipe a trailer in the first place??

Throw the tire and rim over the ball in the bed of the truck. Be sure the rim is facing downward with the inside of the rim facing up with the ball poking through the center rim hole. back up to the trailer, lower it into the tire and rim assembly. Crank up landing gear and go. A big heavy gooseneck trailer ain't going to jump out of that rim, gives one time to make a quick getaway and hook up to the ball in a not so obvious area. Remember, the thief ain't headed to the scales for a motor vehicle inspection, just a quick get away before being caught. Now you and the rest of the universe knows how to make off with a trailer in less than 60 seconds with all the fancy gooseneck locks in place. Best bet is to leave it hooked to the truck so the insurance co. can find you an entire new rig. Even with the wheel locks, if someone wants it bad enough, they will drag it away no matter what. You can chain the trailer tires together.........That will last as long as it take to cut the chain with a pair of Wal-mart bolt cutters. Just be sure you got your trailer insured for what ever may happen, it could happen to you........Tonight!!!!

As for the electric and electric over hydraulic jacks......Well, disable the electricity, remove the battery, remove a fuse, disconnect a wire somewhere, etc., after you lower the trailer so a truck can't be backed underneath.

I see.But I still don't see how it would be possible for it to turn with it in that tire,but,if it's on a ball,it will sit there,that's true.But,if they steal mine where it is at,there's not too many places more remote than where it is,so,they'd have time to hook it up.

But I'd like to see the guy that could knock that coupler lock off with one blow of a ball peen hammer.He'd have to be a combo of Joe Weider and Arnold Swarchnegger to do it,average person would break their damn wrist if they took a hard blow at that lock.You might bend it a little if it was sticking out there but you AREN'T going to break it,I guarantee you that.They would have to take a hacksaw and saw that bolt in two or hammer that round padlock off,the ideal thing would be to just be able to pick the lock.No hammering or wrist splints required for that.

The weight of the trailer would hold the coupler in the tire rim as long as you don't take off/stop to fast.  My neighbour had to do this a couple of years ago (by my suggestion) because his coupler had rusted shut in the closed position and he couldn't get the bolt loose to take the coupler off.  He had to tow it to a shop with air tools.

Put one of these on your wheel and sleep tight...

Rentento,I'm talking about the lock too.I've got sense enough to know you couldn't break that coupler,but,you can't break that lock with a blow of a hammer,either.Look at the link up there to see which one I"m talking about.The one we use is like this and it is not lighweight pot metal. it is heavy,and no body is going to break it with a swing of a hammer.If they try,they'll be laying on the ground holding their damn arm saying a few choice words and they WON'T be thinking of doing it again.

The only way to get it off is either pick or break the lock which you would have to hammer on IT for a while,too,I mean a while,or hacksaw through that bolt.

But I will concede the point to you,as usual.
