Anyone goin or been to the races in Clinton Ark? Is it worth the time/trip? It sounds like "Sturgis" for horse/mule/wagon people... or maybe "woodstock" on horseback?Where do ya camp? do they have hookups?

We went last year. The parking is chaotic to say the least, just where ever you can find a spot. Regulars get there early and stay all week. No electric or water hook-ups. The showers were bad enough that I didn't even go in them. Out houses for toilets that were in one spot about 20 of them.
The people that invited us have gone for years and just love it. We probably won't go back. The wagon races are exciting to say the least. There were several wagons that had horses that ran away and through the camps until they could get them stopped. Lots of partying and we had a guy come by and ask us about if we had seen a horse that someone had stolen. He said he had it tied up and knew it couldn't get lose but was gone when he got back. It is fun for many people and if you like lots of excitement that's the place for you. I personally like a more quiet horse experience.
Yes, it is probaby like Sturgis replacing motorcycle with horse/mule/wagon. I think everyone should at least go one time it is unbeliveable.

I live not too too far from where they are held.Pretty country.I have not been but have heard that it is like what the old mountain men in the 1800's would call "Rendevous" I think? If you've seen the movie "The Mountain Men" you would recall the scene.Pretty wild n crazy.

I went a couple of years ago and it was great. At that time we parked up on the hill, I guess you can still camp up there. There were some hook ups up there. We didn't take any horses. If you take horses you have to camp in the bottom. It can get REALLY hot so if you go take plenty of water, or whatever. For the places with hookups I am sure you have to make reservations way in advance. Everyone should go at least once. I hope to get to go back some day. They have trail rides, clinics, entertainment at night, booths with lots of stuff for sale.

They got tack, clothes, pictures, a little of this, a little of that. You might even be able to find some good shine there. There was some kind of mule clinic when I was there, didn't make it tho. They got something going on all the time. I am sure they got some kind of medical clinic there or real close. Between all the drinking I am sure goes on down there in the bottom and the wrecks that can happen during the races they need something close. And don't worry about the porta pot. They got them all over the place and every one I used was pretty clean, but you never know when you may need the Lysol.
It's a fun time tho, for real.

Yes,I had it emailed to me in a joke about political correctness, and I thought it was halarious.
Me,I'm from the flatlands, where the duck hunting can't be beat,so,you can call us flatlanders any time.I did move to the "ridge" but am not officially a "hill billy" because it's unique, just a ridge,so,they call us "ridgerunners." Imagine my delight when we bought a palomino colt last Sept.at Ava,MO and his name: Sadie's Ridgerunner.
At the close of the chuckwagon races, hope you can say,"A good time was had by ALL!"

I can tell you that all the campsites with hookups go far too quickly. We raced, so always camped in the bottoms. It seems to have gotten progressively wilder over the years but there are good things about it too. Find a place to be after dark and stay there. We always rode at night but it got harder to find a place with no camps to get through. You have to ride along the creek to the buffalo field at least once while you are there.

As far a port-a-potties all over the place, yes they are but they belong to people who have rented them. I found out the hard way and used one and really got chewed out by the "owner". The porta potties that are provided are in one place by the showers.

we are getting ready now to go! Our third year and wouldnt even think of missing it! yes it is rustic, we have ful living quarters now so it wont be too bad(yahoo). The bathrooms are portapottys, the showers are nasty but better than being stinky and sticky. there is a place we used last year that u can have hot showers a $1 each (which is what we used cause the others ones are straight from a well and verrry cold). It is very hot! There are people who party but if u dont want to no one bothers u about it. i have never been to a place where 20000 stangers can get to gether and not fight! Only fights we have seen were local young boys fighting over a girl. when riding ur horse around camp( 500 acres of it) everyone says hello, are u thirsty? hungry? etc. there were 5000 horses there last year! it is amazing! we get there the first day and stay the whole 9 days! they have trail rides, bar-b-ques, ranch rodeos, concerts etc. We havent had any problems other than our horses had to get used to the wagons and everyone who was driving one was verrrry courtous by either slowing way down to stopping and letting our horses get used to them! again we havent met anyone there who we didnt like!
We parked on the hill the first 2yrs but now we camp down by the creek at buffalo rock. We take cattle panels and elec. fence for our horses. So hope to see u there. Any horse person should see it aleast once!

You could email them and ask.Right now it is so dry here in Arkansas, their county may have a "burn Ban" on and it may or may not affect having campfires this year.

YOU BET! We are going..... I incidentally, am not that super excited about the actual races, don't party hearty or anything, but love camping out and seeing all the horses and mules riders and wagon, zedonks (zebra + jack cross) every kind of camping arrangement you could possibly begin to imagine. We camp with hookups (electric and water) at Southfork...have a LQ trailer now (marvelous) and are parked right across from an old house where they serve breakfast. and a cook fella that does cowboy food cooking for lunch and supper... hey, I cook, but it is my vacation too!
There is a cattle drive and horse roundup today, there are shoeing clinics, mule clinics, cowboy mounted shooting, trailer dealers, Tucker saddlery booth, all kinds of cowboy furniture and decor items for sale, an auction of cowboy collectibles (not like Garcia stuff, just regular stuff) bit and spur makers, food vendors up top with all this. Also, if you have an LQ, there is a rig that drives around to "collect" your holding tanks for a small fee, so that is not a problem. It is a cowboy rendezvous of the first order. They have a snowy river race...up and down hills ending in a small river..all visible from the bluff overlooking the big acreage in the bottom. We ride around, it is huge and you can spend days just riding around on the ranch. The horse has the right of way, no ATVs and it just keeps getting more horses and folks. It is such an amazing sight! There are people here off all ages, some get married here, some die here, and some get created here! We take a hot wire pen and put it up, ride mules. Also, there is a tack repair guy there. In Clinton there is a feed store that has an amazing collection of cowboy furnishings and accessories, as well as feed, halters and tack etc, fence posts and furnishings!
Up top, if you don't have animals, there are rv hookups, reserve early. Down bottom park any place that you can, the regulars have reserved spots. Parking is free in the bottom, not sure what the fee is for up top with hookups. Southfork is a ranch that joins the OF ranch where the activities are, and we pay for the week long hookups. We like that area as we don't have to pull our LQ through the river to park (no bridge, nothing) altho lots and lots and lots of people pull through the river to get to their parking spots throughout. I have visions of damaging something, so I just can't make myself put 22,000 lbs of rig through a rocky river bottom, complete with water swirling through the generator in the rear tack!
Oh, yes, you can use generators for your rigs anywhere you park to help ya out. There are places you can also pull beside of and refill your water tanks if you don't have hookups...
It is amazing, with something for everyone. There is a party element, but no one bothers you if you are not a participant. Dan also is very much on top of things. My first year a fella "took" our ice chest, another cowboy saw him and accosted him about it, long story short is he was kicked out never to return over an ice chest with water in it....happened right then too, not the next morning. You really really don't want to be stealing anything, folks watch out for each other and are really hospitable.....can be hot and dusty, and if it really really rains it can get really muddy, altho I have not been there when it did. There are a lot of activities, and you can do just what you want or just ride and enjoy the scenery, it can be as lively or not as you choose......come enjoy, and be truly amazed.... It may be the last real cowboy rendezvous type of deal this side of Pendleton and Cheyenne!
