Just curious what everyone's hay is going for. Its gotten pricey here in colorado from all the snow this year but I'm hoping with all the moisture here that it will drive the price down to a reasonable range. I have used the same producer for 3 years, grass hay premium 70# average. Last year $5/bale. 2 years ago $3/bale. 3 years ago $5.50/bale.

Price of fuel is a driving factor. Around here $5 is pretty standard. Now that alot of hay ground is being plowed under in the name of ethanol ( don't get me started) expect it to skyrocket the next couple of years as inventory goes down.Rich

Luckily, we raise our own hay, 11 acres of alfalfa/grass mix. Very nice stuff, if I do say so myself. Just sold some of last years for 3.50/bale, they weigh between 75-85# tho'. We did sell some to a local guy who moved out to Colorado, took 90 bales last winter, bet he raised the price on you guys out there. We're ready for the first cutting this week, hopefully will get 4 cuttings this year, last year really dry, only got 3 and not many bales. This is very nice, leafy, good horse hay,( Timothy, Orchard,Alfalfa,Brome mix) so will probably go for  3.50/bale( or a little more depending on supply) this year too. I can feed 5 horses off 1 1/2 bales of this a day, so it's worth it. Some of these bales get really heavy,( my old back can sure feel it!!) Best of luck finding good hay...............and at a good price!

$40 for round bale, 3.50 for sq.

Extremly dry here this year and the hay crop is way off. A friend cut this past week and where they have been getting maybe 750 bales in this field, this year they got 250. Way down, so the price is going up as winter gets near, an I suspect will be in short supply again this year.

Our hay prices have gone crazy here also.  But with the cost of fuel to cut-n-bale I can't blame the farmers.

$45 for 3x3 half ton bales and $5 for small bales.  Or basically $100 ton is bought by the truckload and weighed.

Get ready to CHOKE!!!

I had to pay $9.95 a bale for 100 lbs bales of 1st cutting alfalfa, and $10.50 a bale for 4 way grain hay mix. I bouhgt all I could get as the hay and feed wanted $11.00 a bale and $14.00 a bale (100 lbs bales) (I bought only 60 bales cause thats all I could afford)

That would be understandable in the city, but I live 1-2 miles from 12,000 acres of hay growing, and the brokers have sewed up the supply to keep the price up and the supply short. Soooo I went to the growers and asked to buy off the field, and they were more than happy to let me buck, load, and transport my own hay!!

OUCH...MY BOTTOM HURTS!!!

Steve

I haven't heard what square bales are going for this year down here but the guy that has my hay field leased said he was going to get $80 for the bales he is doing now. He makes big bales with the netting looking stuff on them. That was if people came out here and picked them up, if he moves them to his place he is going to charge $100. Seems kind of high to me, glad I don't have to buy any from him. I get what I need in payment for the grass.

$11.00 for decent T & A though the bigger bales are $14.00 - $18.00 , $7.00 for coastal, $14.00 - $20.00 for alfafa depending on the size

gas prices and distance as none of this is grown in Fla...

Friends and neighbors stock up. Last year was a decent year for hay here in the mid-atlantic. This year blows. The weather has been nice but dry. Yields are way down. My supplier is telling me that yields are down over 50% from last year. I'm laying in enough of last years hay to see me deep into winter, and this years for the coldest ( latest ) parts early next year. This spring he carried over a couple thousand squares, that will not happen next year. I got caught in that trap of hunting hay in Feb. a few years ago, never again. Now is also a good time to make sure your fields are in good shape especially going into fall. Last year I strip grazed 12" tall stockpiled fields until mid Feb. ( only stopped because the ground thawed and it got wet), could have gotten a few more weeks if the weather cooperated. Just a couple hours a day of good grazing can really dent your hay needs ( disclaimer : even dead/dormant grass can contain high sugar amounts, watch closely especially if you have founder prone horses).Yikes, sorry about the hijack, should have started new thread.Rich

I still have about 50 alfalfa/coastal mix bales left over from this winter.  My husband thought I was nuts when I told him I wanted to have about 450 bales last fall, but he was glad when he talked to others and found out what they were paying in Feb-March.

In Kansas we had a drought last year and hay got high this last winter. Toward the end of the winter we paid $7.00 for  small bales and were glad to buy it.  We usually pay about $2.50 per small bale. Hay got hard to find and I will definitely not let that happen again. So far this year the hay crop looks good-we have had lots of rain.

I just posted on the horse forum. Here in North Texas hay is finally comming down. Squares are $4.50 and rounds $55. We have had a wet Spring. If you could find hay a few months ago it was $10 and $125 for a round. I was happy last year at $7.50....well looks like I better be cleaning the barn and stocking up...It is already starting to dry around here...

I guess I shouldn't complain when hay gets to 3.25.

I just paid 2.75 stacked for alfalfa hay that was some of the best I've had since I moved to Iowa.

Those were good sized bales at 2.50/2.75. I can't lift them!

2.25 for the small ones from another farmer.

Trying to make everyone move to IA?    I can't remember the last time I paid under $3 a bale for decent hay.  I got some late cut hay last fall for $3.50.  All the hay farmers had to cut late because of all the floods/rain.  I had to double check my GPS to make sure I really was back in the desert!!

We paid $1.50/bale  sm. squares average 60# in central Wisconsin.  Nice alfalfa grass mix.  this the most we've ever paid.  Get it from a farmer right off the field.

$3.00 - $3.50 for 65 pound brome squares out of the field . $3.75 - $4.00 delivered, not stacked. And $5.00 stacked. Looks like our Kansas hay is being trucked out of state again to help those who need it... unfortunately it drives up the local prices, but with the price of fuel and fertilizer these prices aren't as bad as we thought they were going to be.

$1.75 - #60 bale off the field......Timothy/Alfalfa mix. Nice clean hay. I've been dealing with this dairy farmer for years and I've never had bad hay/prices. The man is really good to deal with.

I just paid 3.50 for orchard grass 40# bales and 40$ for round bales. My loft is full now. I'm glad that I didn't wait  for a 2nd cutting. The way things are here, there may not be a 2nd cutting.
