I have a 3500 dually, 8.1, Allison. "THEY", I believe it was GM says, no need to use "tow/haul", towing anything under 7500#. My truck won't shift to 5th gear until I reach 62 mph with it in "tow/haul", so I use it when I see fit, whether towing a loaded trailer, or racing empty, stop light to stop light! Most of the time on flat land it stays in the "NON tow/haul" mode. I just let the Allison do it's thing!

I also have a 3500 8.1 Allison Dually. If I have 3 horses in the bumper pull, I'll use it. If less than that I won't . I don't use it for pulling the Motorcycles, but I DO use it for pulling the Big Trailer.

I know what it's for,Terri.
I ought to know better by now than to post a reasonable post in public on this forum.Everytime you do you get blasted for it.Thanks, laxpactrick, rentento, and especially N2ridin.YOU know what I'm talking about, don't you?!!
Yes,farmboy, that is what WE choose to do with our tow/haul mode, and we haven't bought a new tranny as of yet for it.If that's what you want to do with yours it will be fine.Otherwise you will think your engine is about to throw a rod.And as I tried to point out, you'll be pulling over every gas station.
Chadsalt,I can afford the gas and just about anything else I want to do,just so you'll know.

It's kind of interesting, but my Allison runs cooler pulling a heavy load with the tow/haul off, and I have only noticed any slip when pulling steep grades of 6-8%, before it downshifts. I only use it going downhill.

Tx. What does your tranmission temp run, say while towing 10,000# running at 65-70 mph? Mine will sit on 190-195 and will creep up to 210 pulling Black Mountain with the 496 turning 3600 rpm, third gear, tow haul, torque converter locked up. Outside air temp that day was 96 degrees.

I use it in town or till I get to about 55 - 60mph then release it. (Dodge HO Cummins)

I'm usually hauling 17,500-19,000 and the temp. runs 180-190, and I have never seen it over 210. There are a lot of times running on level interstate that it never comes off the peg at 160, with a load and runnig 70+.

When I have the tow/haul on, the temp consistently runs 30-40 deg. higher. I don't understand all I know about these new auto.'s, but they are a different animal than what I used to deal with. I can't count the number of torque converter seals I've blown in the older(90's) Ford auto's. I have about 145,000 on a 5 spd. and about 20,000 on a new 6 spd. and haven't had the first problem with either of them. I agree with Dawn, they work better at low speeds with the tow on, don't seem to be hunting around for a gear as much, and downhill, they sure help.

To me the majic word is "HUNTING" not what I'm towing. Poor me drives Dodge but whatever it is hunting is the killer not the load. I can pull my limit on the flat 70mph freeways no problem, Get into the hills and the hunting will begin. I just push that there little button and it's gone. Shifting in and out of gears makes heat! Heat kills....

I don't tow anything less than about 5000lbs. Most my equipement runs about 13,000lbs, so your experience will vary if you are towing a small motorcycle trailer at 1200 lbs.
I find several reason to use the Tow/Haul anythime I'm hooked up.
1. I like the fact that it pushes the shift point slightly higher. This keeps the engine in it's powerband. Even when driving down mainstreet here in town at 25 mph. With Tow/Haul off the tranny shift up into a high gear and the truck idles along at 1200rpm, If I need to accellerate a little to get through a yellow light, the engine lugs, the tranny downshifts and it takes a few seconds to speed up. With Tow/Haul the tranny stays in a lower gear and the engine RPMS stay up in the 1800-2000rpm range. If I need a little extra speed, it's there right now, No downshift, no lugging.
2. With Tow/Haul I have engine breaking, With Tow/Haul turned off the Torque Converter unlocks as soon as you touch the brakes and you have no engine braking. My brakes are lasting SOOOOOO much longer in the trucks with Tow/Haul than they did in trucks with just an Over drive button. This is great in town as well as flying down a 6-7% grade at 65 mph. In addition to to the brakes lasting longer I have so much more stopping power.

I use it always when towing. Even if I drive 200 ft over to our compressor to ck air in tires. I had a 96 Dodge and never hurt the transmission. Sold it at 82000 miles to stepson and he has TRIED to tear it up and has not. Now have F350 6.0. Please don't slam me.

I have a 04 Chevy 2500HD 6.0 when should I use my Tow/Haul
This is directly related to your vehicle...
A Tow/Haul mode helps the four-speed automatic transmission keep its cool when towing. Press the Tow/Haul button on the end of the shifter, and the transmission holds gears longer before shifting up or down, reducing the annoying tendency to hunt between third and fourth gears in hilly terrain. Shifts are harder and quicker in Tow mode, reducing heat buildup in the transmission. You should find it improves the performance of the truck when pulling a trailer and reduces driver annoyance levels.

I just traded my 2004 chevy 2500 crew cab, 48, miles off last week. Most of those miles were with a 3h 4 star trailer. I used tow/haul anytime I hauled a trailer. It got the same mpg 10+/- with or with out it pushed. I looked at the manual when I bought it and it said to use it when you tow/haul a trailer? So I did? I found that I noticed after a fer miles if I didnt have it on, shifted different. I bought a 2007 2500HD I dont have enough miles on it to tow my trailer yet.. But when I do I will use it every time I tow/haul. I dont want to buy a new tranny if I dont have to.. 16 MaryM
