Is it true that Kentucky has been closing racetracks and other equine gatherings due to an outbreak ?

I haven't heard that one Reg, I'll make a call or two today and see what's up. The thieves(oopps, I meant politicians) have been trying to get slots at the tracks, that's been all over the news.

I don't know who you are but that's a flat out lie. I just got off the phone with Keeneland, Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Training Center. There are NO quarantines at these sites in Kentucky. They are all requiring the Certificate of Vacination for Herpes to come on the grounds. That's all.

Ouch ! and Ooops.
Didn't mean to stir anything up here, just asking.
Anyway, I'm taking a couple of hossies down to Maryland next week for someone and she had heard "something" about KY and Herpes, so asked me if I disinfected my trailer. "Well, no, why ?".
I got the pressure washer out and mixed up some bleach, which I then ran through with the soap dispenser nozzle on. It smells like a hospital in there now, hopefully it will air off by tuesday and the horses won't think they're going for surgery (-:
On reflection, doing this when I get BACK would be more appropriate (-:

OK, I know bleach would eat up the rubber mats - eventually.
I forget what the dilution factor is with that pressure washer, but I cut it about 3 or 4 to 1 in the dispenser jug before I started.
If anyone knows a better disinfectant please advise.

Get off your high horse

That wasn’t a lie, just checked Quarantine was just lifted the end of last week.  We have horses being boarded here, waiting to be shipped from almost a month now. They just started letting the horse move with certificates late last week.

The horses are being boarded in PA and being shipped to Kentucky. Believe me, it’s been a big deal the shippers are really complaining about it because there not making any money without the horses being shipped. Were shipping horse tomorrow morning for the first time in 30 days or more.

I bet ole' MEBELL won't respond to the above question, because then he would be lieing. I have since called them all back, I have many friends working at all three locations. NONE OF THEM have been or are currently under a quarentine, I repeat NONE OF THEM. I am not on a high horse, someone (Reg) who is very helpful to this forum asked a question, I knowing lots of folks in the TB business called them and asked. There may be other facilities that are under quarentine. The 3 above that I have been talking about don't, all you have on this site is your word.

Thanks everyone for input.
As I said, the person I am moving the horses for had "heard something", so she was/is responding to is perhaps 2nd or 3rd hand info. I was responding to that, so what I said was diluted, distorted, even farther... this is the nature of rumor propagation.

I'm going to err on the side of caution and remind the owner of the horses concerned that their shots had better be up to date. I'm trying to not be alarmist and might not disinfect the trailer when I get back.
There will be no off-loading between Mass and M'land anyway, they will be going to a private residence in M'land.

Tnx again, I really DO appreciate all input.

I live in Delaware and we have been under herpes watch since the end of January. The DE dept of Ag sent me a letter that states all horses entered for racing or showing within the State of Delaware present a "Certificate of Vaccination" for Equine Influenza and Rhinopneumonitis within the past 90 days.  The effective date of this order shall be (90) days after the date of this notice. By the authority of Delaware Code 3, Part I, Section 101.

I called about this and basically every horse that crosses state lines has to have a certificate with them or they will be quarantined at the owners expense.

Pimilco racetrack had a quarantine and I'm not sure if Laurel racetrack went under one also.  They had quite a few horses test positive and a few die from it.  The racing commission didn't quarantine fast enough and horses were allowed to leave. One horse came to the Eastern Shore (MD). There it infected another barn and an Olympic horse in training had to be put down. Another horse went to Fairhill Racetrack (MD at the PA border) and horses tested positive and were under a 21 day quarantine.  It was reported they had horses ship out to KY, NJ, NY and FL where they were tracking equines for quarantine.  I don't know how they handled the other states.  This is what was reported by the News Journal and USA Today.

It takes 21 days for the virus to run its course.  My vet said it can last up to a week in water and fresh manure. It can pass from horse to horse by human touch.

There was at least two quarantines in Kentucky. And there are strict requirements for horses from Pimlico coming in. HWbar you should read this. It's from the Kentucky Department of Ag, Office of State Veterinarian before you go slamming people. Seems your friends are full of bull $#!t.

Now here you go, if you read the damn article it says the  recent quarentines were at Turfway Park, and Western Kentucky University. Churchill had a quarentine for 3 weeks last May, I didn't ask these guys if there ever had been a quarentine in the history of the tracks, I asked them If they were under one now. Please refer to Reg's original question. He wanted to know if they were closing tracks or eqine activities. I am not slamming anyone, but now I quess you also can kiss my a^%$.

Um, did you fail to read further???? Copiied and pasted......this year, the "Training Center"

Current Situations

West KY Training Center

The Western Kentucky Training Center in Henderson, home to 16 thoroughbred horses in one barn, was released from quarantine on February 3, 2006.

A 2002 thoroughbred filly presented Sunday January 1, 2006 with what was initially described as stiffness. By Tuesday, January 3rd the animal was described as demonstrating a mild ataxia. EHV DNA was detected from EDTA buffy coat collected on Sunday.  A second filly was also found febrile on Sunday with evidence of a respiratory infection.  EHV DNA was detected in this animal from a nasal swab collected that same day.  The facility was placed under quarantine with no movement onto or off of the facility permitted. Horses from this facility routinely 'race and return' at Turfway Park, though no specific link to the infected premises has been identified. The epidemiology and disease investigation continues.

2 of 16 horses stabled at the training center in Henderson, KY were found by PCR testing to be affected with equine herpes virus type 1.

Did you fail to read my post, I stated that Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Kentucky Training Center(located on Paris Pike, Lexington) That's who I called, THAT'S ALL I CALLED. My guys told the truth. YES I AGREE THERE IS AN EFFORT TO STOP THE HERPES OUTBREAK IN KENTUCKY. Reg wanted to know if they had a quarentine in Kentucky, I just called the places that I stated. You all can argue with yourselves all you want, I CALLED THREE PLACES THATS ALL, NONE OF WITCH HAVE A QUARENTINE. THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THE PLACES THAT DO OR DID.  I feel like I am talking with my 6 yr. old. I don't even like TB's and here I am talking about them. Most all of them should be on a plate in France.

Hwbar,

The actual answer to Reg's question is no, they are requiring certificates and documents. In answer to you and your 6 yr. old, it makes me think I'm talking to my 19 yr old. While ALL tracks were not under quarantine, there HAVE in fact been quarantines. As for TB's, I don't have much use for them either. Bottom line is that the track quarantines are pretty much out east, and KY is just trying to manage the situation.

I probably asked the wrong question )-:

I will be taking a couple of pasture pets from a boarding barn in Mass to a private residence in Maryland. They will NOT be in contact with any racing stock, or other horses. What I had HEARD (n'th hand) was "something about herpes and quarantines" - Yes, vague at best.
Probably what I should have asked was what precautionary steps do I and the horses' owner need to take regarding additional papers and trailer disinfection before and after visiting an affected (or suspect) area. We want to "do the right thing" AND be legal - obviously.

Thanks everyone, I think I've gleaned what I needed to know from the replies, sorry it caused some friction between us.

Lets not argue the fine points of past and present tense.
Although I said "has been closing" I probably meant "are closing, or have recently been closing" (-:
I just wanted to know what is relevant to my trip.

Alright HW..... I have long respected your posts...but when you slammed TB's that was it for me!    We raise TB's and Appendix breds.  I don't think any one of them deserve to be on a plate...at least not yet!  I prefer a nice juicy Arab flank steak myself!

As far as the quarantines go, most have been lifted.  We have to provide proof of all innocs, neg. coggins, and a state health certificate to the Racing Secretary.

I also agree the rumor mill can run rampant, but most of the time the original message was true, but along the way it gets blown out of proportion.  When in doubt make phone calls.

I love this forum! You learn so much from a diverse group of folks!

JTBP - Just to be picky. It was someone other than HWBar that originally suggested a plate in France. I didn't challenge it at the time, but my thought was that there are FAR better equine menu items in Germany, at least there used to be.
I'm the one who started all this, so I might as well fan the flames (-:

Actually for TWH or other gaiters I think they go good with Jack Daniels BBQ sauce, Mules are a bit tough, need extra time for marinating,  Clydesdale goes great with a good cold draft...lol...  Don't get me started on those small spinning horses..
