With all the hype and BS on rising fuel prices at the pump, I was wondering what others are thinking or feeling about this. Currently in NE Michigan gas is $2.29/gal and diesel is $2.36/gal. There is a possibility of prices going up to as much as $5/gal for gas/diesel. Wow, painful numbers to look at and psychologically damaging! LOL!
Are these numbers making you rethink your horse traveling plans? Or are you just "not worried about it"? Do you think you will travel less?

My thinking is when we travel, we'll stay out longer. No more single overnite trips... More days out for the same fuel. Horses still cost less than psychiatric help or marrige counseling.

Given what we have into trucks, trailers and.....
Oh, the A_N_I_M_A_L_S themselves and their upkeep, the word "perspective" comes to mind.
About 8 gallons per hundred miles with the big trailer, maybe 7 with the small one, =~$20 for $2.50 a gallon, $40 if it goes to $5. I rarely get out of a tack shop for under $50.
I'm trying to think of only the price differential, though I guess it has been climbing since about the mid 70s. Right now it seems a harsh, unlike the '80s when 2 salary reviews a year were not uncommon and double digit increases were EXPECTED on both of them - stock options also helped.
I don't know where fuel prices are relative to inflation, other price indexes, etc. It doesn't FEEL to be incredibly out of step.
I don't expect to change my plans that much, i.e. I will not consciously skip the better venues just because of their distance.
Just a_NOTHER $20 or $30 for the week-end )-:
Maybe less if I slow down (-:
I expect/hope diesel fuel will climb slower than gas as the winter heating season fades - ever the optimist.

Won't change our plans. Might drink more water instead of a cold beer! I'd rather spend the money on diesel and be able to ride than have a 'beverage' or even go out to eat. Priorities!!!!

We had planned on a Spring trip to Eminence, Missouri for the Cross Country Trail Ride there in May. But with the high diesel prices have decided on a shorter trip to Arkansas which will be less than 1/2 the distance. Thought someone posted back in November that diesel prices would be coming down by now (guess it was just wishful thinking).

Ya'll are planning on driving somewhere? I was gonna have the horses haul the truck to NM. 3 horses, 1/2 ton truck. Should take, what 3-4 weeks? I think the kids have enough DVD's to keep them occupied. Ice chest with some Dr. peppers and a portapotty in the back of the truck and we'll be good to go.
The only place I'm going is NM in a few weeks, and back in July. Hopefull comming back won't cost as much as going up. We'll just have to coast down hill till we hit the coast.

Oh, heres some good news for us: Chevron/Texaco is purchasing Unocal, you know the 76 gastations. Great, even less competition now. But rest easy, the oil companies should make even more profits from deal: "ChevronTexaco earned $13.3 billion last year, the most profitable year since its inception in 1879. Unocal earned $1.21 billion last year, nearly doubling its profit from the previous year." & "The bid to buy Unocal marks the second major acquisition negotiated by O'Reilly since he became ChevronTexaco's CEO in 2000. The company bought Texaco Inc. for $39 billion 3 1/2 years ago, a deal that resulted in thousands of layoffs."
Now don't get me wrong, I am devoted capitalist. But why are the oil companies making record holding profits while our costs continue to rise? Where is thier increase in operating costs? Smells rotten to me.
"U.S. stocks fell on Monday, as oil prices held above $57 a barrel". Some analysts have predicted oil prices peaking about $90 a barrel this year, that would still not be as bad as the prices during the 70's, that peaked at about $100 a barrel (adjusted for inflation).
The bad part about this is that it isn't just the price of gas that goes up, the cost of producing and/or shipping anything goes up as well. Everything gets more expensive. That is unless you own an oil company and can protect yourself from fuel price increases.
I think I'll just ride my horse to work now. Buy stock in horses.

I'll be working only a few minutes away from my house this next year and I'm thinking of buying a little motor scooter to ride around. I'll leave my PSD parked during the week!

I'm thinking more long rides, instead of every weekend.? I have not done my first over-night yet this year, I'm a month behind last year. Then if I do more week long rides I will have to go it alone. Oh well.

Don't think it will affect us this summer, but that is beacause the foal is due in the next two weeks. Most of our shows are close and three days at a time, except the local schooling shows, 20 miles away. I think that where it is going to cause a effect is championships for region six, that were held at the local racetrack, Emerald Downs. They are now being held in Idaho, make it a 10-12hour drive from Seattle. Probaly will weed down the almost folks that would go and do not have a good chance at placeing in the top three spots.

Hi everybody
As most of you said, fewer trips that take longer. I think I will stay over night for the weekend instead of just trailering away every Sunday. Try to think of justification for the spending- I don't drink, don't smoke, don't gamble---geez I better be able to drag the trailer!! Right? I will also pack my new electric cooler with food instead of eating out.
Which reminds me- thanks Dave for the info on wiring the trailer so I CAN pack my electric cooler with food. Can't wait to get the stuff and start the wiring.
Jean in Minnesota (the weather is getting warmer- the gnats are here)

This is my first year with my LQ trailer. We bought it to camp even without the horse. With prices so high, I'll stick closer to home but DEFINITELY want to go and go often.

Fuel prices will remain high until this country enacts a strong energy policy. Where are the guardians of the Bacon-Davis & Taft-Hartley acts that are supposed to prevent monopolies and price fixing? Sorry, but I don't see any short term improvements from the current administration who are tied to the oil & energy markets. Be prepared for the upcoming downturn in the economy. I remember only too well the consequences of the 70's and early 80's fuel price increases.

Here in Southern MI, gas is 2.44 per gallon, diesel is 2.37 per gallon. Went to Ohio yesterday, diesel was 1.90 in Bryan. Fuel prices won't change my plans.I'll just drink water instead of Diet Coke & eat bologna instead of turkey:-)

Fuel prices had alot to do with what and where we went last summer! It will really have alot to do with this summer. Was heading out tomorrow to go to the coast for the weekend, we camp in the trailer without the horses. Hate to go down and the weather be bad and not be able to enjoy, would feel like I could have saved that gas money for a trip another day. It's only 300 mile round trip but at 10 MPG and $2.30 per gallon this morning for fuel and another $25.00 x 2 for two nights stay at campground, fishing bait, food, distilled beverages, etc, you do the math. Ain't got alot of cash as it is and I get tired of giving it all away to the oil companys. Wanted to go down to Panama City Beach TWH Show, but I don't think that's going to happen either.

In Los Angeles, diesel is $2.65 a gallon, more expensive than premium gas. The bad part is that I am used to it. I've been driving around 400 miles a weekend.

Horsecamping is our only hobby. If we primitive camp we are really out only the price of fuel. I think that is a pretty cheap way to have a vacation. Headed to Montanna this summer, won't have to pay to camp so that won't be too bad. horse camping can a good economical way to get out and enjoy. we sometimes pay at private camps but usually on special occasions. debbie
