Hi everyone... New to the forums. My wife and I just picked up this horse trailer (not sure if allowed to post the price here). It's in pretty good shape for a 34 year old trailer (wow, I was in Jr high when this trailer was made).

I was wondering if anyone has ever seen one like this? It is a 1978 Bellamy 6 horse head to head, the title says its 28' but the trailer over length is 34', not really sure why they left out the overhang/goose area off that measurement (1st goose I have owned, but all my RV 5th wheels were over all length). Our plan is to redo it little by little, I have already started the strip down to see whats "in side", check for leaks, replace wiring and so on. It did come with all the very heavy steel stall panels, chains and so on for 6 horses, the trailer is setup up for box stalls, but nothing for box stalls came with it, so that will be a added setup for later.

Here are a few photos "after" I started to strip it out.

Sorry for the links not working, I must have done something wrong or maybe that isn't allowed here... I missed the edit time to fix the post. I guess I will attach one so you can see the outside of the trail or if you wish you can just copy and past my links above to see the photos I posted.

No, I just started. When I got it, it had old insulation hanging all over, broken plastic wall panels and so on. So I guess what you are looking at now is stripped out and ready to start the work.

I remember back in the 70's Bellamy's were real high class trailers.  Good luck with your new project! please post more before and after pics.

I can see why... I have to say it seems built really well. I mean after all these years it still had the factory wood floor, not pressure treated believe it or not. The roof looks brand new still and I think the "small" leaks/drips that I have found are from other owners doing silly stuff, as in, replacing old lights that didn't match up to old holes and just adding a screw to one of the holes, not adding news vents the correct way and so on. We have some soft spots and some rot in the corners/around the doors, so the floor has to go. And the Oak, there is so much of it. What they did was the smart thing, they took 1" strips and clued them all together to make the wall sections, SOLID. I have to say 90% of the oak is still 100% and the bad oak is still there, just water stains from the years of a drip here and a drip there to the inside with weather checking in the rear (door areas), the tack room oak is 100%, refinishing should do the job on the oak that needs attention.

Will do on the photos, I have some more, but they just show the removal of "stuff" I will be happy to post them if all wish to see. Just let me know.

Small update... I haven't been able to work on the trailer like I would like to, hurt my back. Anyhow, removed the floor today. All is well with the cross members, except the section that holds the ramp for storage and horse loading, as seen in the pic attach, there is that wide open center section that holds the ramp, those cross members will need to be replaced. All in all, the cross members and frame are in good shape for the trailers age.

I have some more photos for you all if you care to look...

Floor removed, facing front from back
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

Floor removed front, looking into the pass side tack room door
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

These pictures to show the damaged cross members where the ramp stores and is placed for horse loading (note, members aren't missing, if they were here you couldn't store the ramp)
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

These are pictures of the fenders before they are repaired

Pass side

Drivers side
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

2 other cross members need to be replaced (I didn't get a good photos of them, but they aren't "that bad", but might as well do them now), both are back of the rear wheels, so they got all the weather from tire spray and any drainage out of the trailer.

Damage members could have been better, could have been worse for such a old trailer, less then 6 cross members needing replaced is better then more then 6 ;)

Could be the last up date for awhile, time to look for new cross members, cut the old ones out and get to welding the new ones in place. Photos will follow of the repairs.

Will be sure to post new photos when the work starts moving along...

For now... Can I ask how you all feel about this coupler in the links below? In one photo you will see a broken head on one bolt and the other was broken farther up (these bolts hold the moveable jaws), I have replaced those bolts with Grade 8s.

Just something about this coupler doesn't make me feel warm inside, the reason, there seems to be to much confidence left to that "pin" in the back where the U shaped plate holds the jaws together, they both "seem to me" are taking a very big load to trust them. Ok sure, as far as I know this coupler has been on the trailer from day one, but still. Your thoughts?

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

EDIT... As far as I know this coupler is on backward?

I noticed after putting the trailer on jack stands that 2 out of the 4 wheels could be pushed in a bit. So I opened up one drum to see what was going on and I noticed the last person that packed the wheel bearings switched the washers around that hold/lock the drum to the spindle... These axle use a 2 nut lock system. This person had the "thin" washer on the bearing and the thick washer between the 2 nuts, should be the other way around, thick washer on bearing and thin washer between the 2 nuts (I will call it a slip washer, so when tightening the lock nut, you don't move/tighten more the nut on the bearing side).

Anyhow, just 2 photos, one is just showing the wheels off and the other is showing one drum removed...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

Old system? There is a "plate" bolted to the drum that the brake magnet rides on and in turn the magnet isn't held onto the backing plate by anything, it has 2 springs on 2 studs it rides on and that is what pushes the magnet onto the plate bolted to the drum.

Thats ok Bells, just posting out loud. Maybe others will see this type of thing and understand no matter what, it's always better to check things out yourself and not take the word of others, no matter how old or newer a trailer "seems" to be.

Back to the drums/bearings... Well good to check things, who ever did this job did a good job on greasing the bearings, but putting things back together is another story. 3 hubs the washers were on backward like I stated above but one hub was a big problem waiting to happen. Who ever put BOTH washers riding on the bearing, that means there was no slip washer between the 2 nuts AND the oil seal was in backwards (it was shot from the little ride it took to get here). Luckily this trailer only moved about 1/4 mile to my house after the bearing grease job (the guy I bought the trailer from), I have no doubt that much farther, one spindle would have been shot, ether by no grease in the inner bearing or losing the drum from the spindle all together, those nuts would have walked off.

Small update... I have all the wiring done in the back where the horses travel and also upgraded the back rear with LEDs, taillights, even the license plate light is LED.

Switches for the back... Note, this is not finish by any means, just took a pic to this point... Went with household switches instead of RV, they will last forever over the little RV switches.
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/FHF2Omen/Head%202%20Head%20H...

Rear end lights... Will start to upgrade all the maker lights next. Not shown here, but I will be adding to lower black section a "LedGlow 60 LED strip with reverse lights" (nice strip light, LEDs are really bright, have one on my truck).
