If you get a new Duramax with the DPF system...make sure they have reflashed your computer... If you get a used one, the 2007 GMC Classic with the LBZ Duramax, that had the minimal emissions add-ons is an excellent choice...

I've had 4 D-maxes. 02, 03, 05, and 06. Still have the 03 and 06. Getting read to buy a new one. I have absolutely loved them. 02 and 03 had the injector leak issues that was common. Chevy fixed those under warranty. Other than that, no problems at all.

In my area 2006 and early 2007 Duramax trucks with 50000 to 75000 miles on them are selling for what they were when they were new. Local dealer was selling 2007, 3500 dually 4x4, Duramax LTZ's for $33k in the fall of 2008. These trucks had $44000-$47000 sticker prices on them!!!

Bought a 2002, GMC 2500 with Duramax brand new, still my daily driver and Hoss puller... And we just upgraded to a 3H LQ with 10' SW. That truck runs like a champ and pulls the snot out of anything we hook to it. I wanting a new one but will wait untill all the bugs are worked out of the new ones.

That's what I have and I love it. Before I bought this truck I had an '02 Chevrolet duramax dually. I had the injector problems that have been mentioned but Chevy did fix those under warranty with no hassle. In fact, they replaced my whole engine because they concluded that the injectors had caused damage there. Anyway, I loved that truck and would still have it but for a moment of inattention on the freeway. Dang.

I have an 2007 duramax. Absolutely love this truck. I had a 02 and loved that truck also. Only reason i sold it was because I wanted a dually. I have never had any issues with either of them.

What do you mean about reflashing the computer? We have a 2011 gmc and nobody has said anything about this to us.

TYPO NOT DPF....DEF...
The Diesel Emmission Fluid can freeze
"P204F was the code that was being set on my truck. Service manager told me that code is set when pump doesn't build required pressure in a set amount of time. However, if the temperature is below -7*C then it is NOT supposed to set this light until after the DEF has been heated so he's thinking there's a program issue somewhere, or a bigger issue with my truck. "I work at a GM dealer in Alberta. Every 2011 Duramax we have is currently frozen. New trucks with 4 Km on them and full DEF tanks are giving the stage 1 error code - Service Exhaust Fluid System. It's been driving us and our customers crazy but this morning the service manager told me that GM has a fix for the problem with revised heaters and a reflash. The tanks have to be drained which is a problem when they are frozen solid. Have your dealer check for a receent TSB. I'll see if I can find the number next week."

I've got an 01 Dmax and pull a 30' Hart trailer. I love it. I do EFILive tuning on the side so have tuned mine and it makes a huge difference, but even stock they are just great. My next truck will be a Duramax. Also anybody interested in custom tuning just PM me for details.

Appy Girl,
How does your truck do on the down-hill? I am just not getting the Allison tranny on the down-hill. I have the same year as yours '02 GMC Duramax and I red-line it on the steep down grades here in CA. Every time I have to touch the brake, it down-shifts into the lower gear and then I am red-lining!!! I have to hit the brakes on occasion on these grades. How do I keep from going to slow so that the big-rigs are not riding my a$$? I even tried taking it out of "tow- haul" but it still does the down-shift when I hit the brakes.

I have an 03 duramax, and pull whatever it can hook to. All the makes have decent engines, but the trannies were being replaced at around 140K miles..The GM tranny is an Allison jake brake tranny, and it's designed to pull, insted of being converted like some others. If you get the chance to get a duramax, you will not be sorry!! Awesome combo of Isuzu deisel and allison tranny, which is used in deisel pushing motorhomes, and all the RTA buses you see running around..Best towing combo on the road to date

Jackbrat,
We just took a trip to Santa Barbara with a jaunt up and down highway 154 towards Lake Cachuma. Coming down the hill, hubby just put it in 1st gear and we poked down the 7% grade at 30 MPH, at that point if he needed to step on the brakes we are not going to down shift any lower. Who really cares if the big trucks fly by?
But yes I have had the same problem you are talking about. I just step on the accelerator a tad and get it to shift back up. But it really is easier to just shift down and mosey along... Im in no hurry when pulling livestock.

Appy Girl,
That is what I started doing as well- In 2nd gear though. I just hate it though when the truckers ride my butt and don't go around me. They get soooo angry that I am even in "their" lane.

Q: How does the grade braking feature on the Allison transmission work?A: Grade braking is a feature of the 1000 Series transmission in which the transmission automatically selects the proper gear to match the vehicle's maximum braking effort for maximum braking effort of the vehicle. It's an intuitive feature that automatically downshifts to help slow the vehicle when hauling or pulling heavy loads down long, steep grades.

Paul,
The tranny shifts down too low. That is the problem. I touch the brake for it to shift down, usually it isn't enough, so I touch the brakes again and all of a sudden I am in the red RPM's. These are around curves so I can't really hit the gas to pull out of the red. I NEED to slow down.

My 2007 and 2008 Duramaxes are the six speed and I personally have not experienced what you describe...How much weight are you pulling? Do you have the six speed or the five speed Allisons? Also, do you have the most current flash on your computer? You may want to get a SPEED BRAKE from Banks...http://www.bankspower.com/news/show/24-Banks-SpeedBrake I have hear that older Duramax owners have had good luck with that unit

An '02 Duramax. Has the 1,2,3,D with the circle around it.I guess it would be a 4 speed- I guess unless the tow-haul mode is counted as a speed? Then 5? I bought it used with 45k on it. So don't have the actual sticker it came with. The manual doesn't state which it is. It is the 2500 HD 6.6L turbo diesel.short-bed,extended cab,4x4.
I haul a 2-horse GN (all aluminum) empty weight is around 4400 lbs. The deck length is only 14' , the nose is 8'. I usually only haul 1, 1200 lb. horse and myself when going camping. Not a LQ but I do carry some camping stuff. The trailer is an 2006 Monarch Classic. Never took it to a weigh scale. Will at some point but I know I am not over-loading my truck at all. The axles on the trailer are placed further back on the trailer. They are 6000 lb. axles (each)

Do you have the M option on your shifter? On the newer Allisons...this is how it operates...note what happens when you are NOT in Tow/Haul mode...Q. Automatic Grade Braking - Downshifts - To which gear will it downshift in each mode?A. The downshift will always be to the next lower range, it will not 'skip' ranges. In Tow/Haul mode, grade braking can command downshifts to 2nd range, while in Normal mode, grade braking will not command downshifts below 4th range.

Paul, if I understand correctly what she is experiencing is normal. On the 01-06 (IIRC) there is a dashed "red line" at 3200-4800 rpm, aka the grade brake rpm range. The solid red line beyond 4800 rpm is not to be entered. The dashed red line was removed (~06) due to this type of confusion from drivers. No bigger than her trailer is, the grade braking feature will provide more than enough slowing power....if allowed to operate properly.
