I have contacted 2 dealers,, 1 in MS and 1 in CO, to discuss a trade / or buy outright trailers they had listed. It has been over a week since I've heard from them. I have good credit, dont need financed, and they have blown me off. Makes me not want to have dealings with them regardless how good of offer they come back with....if they do. Is this par for the course in the trailer industry?

Absolutely NOT.....the dealers should be on top of things and getting trailers moved as quick as possible. I know that if someone calls and is looking for something I work as hard as possible to find them the type of trailer they are looking for or put them in touch with someone that can help them more than me. Good luck and just keep trying.

Take your money and run!.. I just bought a new trailer and it happened to me too... But I did some calling around to other dealers and found one that went beyond my expectations in helping me find my dream trailer. Do some more calling..... Or pm me and I can give you the name of the guys who took the stress and worry out of buying a trailer for me....

By not taking you seriously, they are telling you they don't want your business. So, don't give it to them.
When my wife and I were looking for trailers, we had talked with a local dealer quite a bit. We were looking at all sorts of different brands, and the local dealer said they could either get any brand we wanted, or put us in touch with somebody who could. When we decided on Brand X trailer, we knew of a few dealers that had them in stock and were willing to sell them to us. We then talked to our local dealer and I asked what they thought of Brand X. He said he didn't really like ordering them because of one reason or another. What he really was saying to me was that it wasn't really worth his time or my money. So, I bought elsewhere.

I whole heartedly agree with the Pennsylvania dealer. The economy has improved; but I can't beleive any dealer is so overwhelmed with business that he can't get back with a customer. There are a lot of trailer dealers, and lot of trailer inventory for sale; so EVERY customer is important. Having sold trailers for nearly q

AND if they are that busy that they cant get back with customers maybe they should put more of the AMERICANS that are out of jobs back to work. I know that I have started getting busier so have had to hire another person to come help out. Put America back to work and everyone wins.

I have had the pleasure of dealing with Denny's in MN. I have not bought a trailer from them, but both Denny and Sean are great about returning both e-mails and phone calls. If I were in the market for a new trailer, they would be the first phone call I would make.
I'm sure other people here have recommedations as well!

And when you find the dealer that does give you good service do not expect them to be the cheapest. They may be paying the better help more and have enough coverage to take care of business.

I called five dealers in reference to a trade. one in IA, one in MS, two in NC and one here in FL. I got the same run around as you. Out of the five only one called me back. I asume because my trailer is Steele and a 6hrs they can't turn a profit on it so they don't want it.

The horse trailer industry is just like any other, there are good and bad. If you are interested in those two specific trailers what you might try doing is getting ahold of a recommended dealer and have them negotiate the deal for you. Odds are they can also find something similar on someone else's lot if they don't have it themselves.

If it's the dealer in CO that I "dealt" with a couple years ago, write them off. They had a trailer priced on here at a sale price. I called right away & asked about it. Was first told they didn't have it anymore, then told it was a "misprint", but I could talk to the mgr when they came in. So did that, & guess what she told me?? It was never advertised at that price, it was MY mistake!! I said "OH ok, then the ad I have printed out in front of me is a figment of my imagination?? She got REALLY nasty with me. I called the Mfg'er & told them what had transpired & that they lost a sale - that had they been HONEST with me from the get go, I'd have been negotiable possibly on the price IF it was a misprint - we all make mistakes. But by them lying, & jacking me around, I was done & it unfortunately reflected on the Mfg'er too. They were NOT happy.

To echo Cutter99, Denny's Trailer Sales in Wykoff, MN. I've bought three trailers from them and would again. They do a lot of business over the internet. Give Denny or Sean a call.

There have been places her in Oklahoma that were shut down 2-3 days last week, and 1 day this week. Might not be a matter of being outside, but not being there at all.

The type of trailer you are trading, will have a strong impact on the attention you'll receive from a dealer. The dealer will usually only want to handle a trailer that he knows he can resell, and from which, make a profit. If he can't sell it, he will be forced to not take your trade, or offer a very low price, which he can afford to loose from his profit on the new trailer.
A steel, 6H trailer in my area, would sit on a lot until the last vestiges of rust became one with the ground matter.
One only has to go to any car dealership, boat sales and trailer dealers, to find the cast offs that the dealers took to make a sale. The last row of cars, or the farthest corner in the lot, will hold the discards that the dealer has little hope of moving. Basically they have little value other than their weight in scrap. Sometimes the dealer has to pay to have them removed.
I'm not applauding poor manners from a dealer. He should be man enough up front, to inform you that he's not interested in your offer. The buyer should be aware, that what he has, may not be valuable to other horse owners or to the dealer.

Gard's post reminds me of my friernd that got mad because no one wanted to trade with him. He "I had my trailer custom made because I could not find one like it anywhere, and now no one wants to trade for it!"
As I replied- if you had to have it custom built- just maybe you are the only one that sees the value in it.
I always chuckle when I see a for sale ad listing- "custom built" and then they want more money for a wierd duck.

We're Oklahoma dealers. We aren't used to 12" of snow. Our roads were closed, and so were we. We try to accomodate all of our customers and feel like we go above and beyond, but...I get calls at 11pm at night...on Sunday mornings...and virtually 24/7 wanting us to open the lot after hours to look at trailers. We are owner operated so we feel like we give better customer service. We answer all e-mails, even if it's a polite "sorry, we aren't interested"...and we get A LOT of e-mails from sellers who have an impossible trade and literally send their e-mails with pictures to many dealers to see if anyone will give what they want. We get daily calls from buyers with trades they want $50,000 for that won't bring $40,000 retail, or they need payoff on a trailer they are upside down in because they bought it with no down payment at a time when you only had to be breathing to get a loan. Most buyers who have a trade expect to get top retail price for their trailer but beat us up and offer less than wholesale for ours....and we can't stay in business unless we make a profit, so some trades are impossible, yet we stay polite through it all. I always suggest to these buyers that they buy an ad on HTW and sell the trailer themselves and then come in and buy ours. A lot of buyers get insulted, even if you make an honest trade offer.I've heard from customers that some dealers don't return calls or e-mails...or worse, they are rude. Nobody's perfect, but I don't see a reason beyond being closed to not respond in some way...but please don't take that as normal for all dealers...there are a lot of good ones out there.

The trailer I was trading 2005 Exiss sport three horse seven foot short wall in excellent shape. The dealers would not make an offer.
Looking at the comparables, it looks like top retail on your trailer is around $23,000. A fair wholesale value is around 20% less than retail, which is $4600 less...so your trailer would have an approximate trade value of $18,400. Would you be happy with that figure?

I did trade trailers and was allowed 21000.00 for my trailer as a trade in. What got me is the other dealers told me to send them pictures and then never responded.
