I have never owned a gooseneck and would like to upgrade.  I have been tent camping with a 2 horse bumper pull.  OK, at 50 years old - being honest!  :)  , I am done with the tent!

In your experience, is there any preference to having the LQ door on the curb side or street side?  It seems to me that it would be easier to have it on the street side ( same as escape door side), but I don't have any experience camping with one.  I also need a 7'6" height for the 16.2 MFT.

Any thoughts or reccommendations?

I had a 2 mule slant with the camper door on the curb side and currently own a 4 mule slant with the midtack and camper doors on the street side.  Seems like every time you pick a campsite, the door is on the wrong side...

Really tho, have not found any one reason better than another for which side the door is on.

Nothing better than saying good bye to the tent!  (unless you are gonna pack in to the back country for a few days).

Alot of them are on the curb side but some aren't. If you go into a horse camp, the fire pit is usually on the same side when you back in.....Truely do not know why a majority of them are on the curb side.

It really shouldn't make a difference BUT in the length of the LQ. If the short wall is short it is better to have the door on the short side so you have more room to "fit" everything on the long wall. Nancy

I put a lot of thought into this when I ordered my trailer. I'd always had the door on the curb side, but I decided to have the door put on the drivers side so I didn't always have to walk around the trailer when I get out of the truck and run back to get something. I have saved myself a lot of steps! I should have had the door on the drivers side all along, its so much easier.

My door is street side. Would have preferred the other side to give me a longer stretch of wall. As AQHA 123 also pointed out, NOT having to walk around the trailer would be nice. Of course, I've pulled over to use the porta potti on long trips and been glad I didn't have to open the door to traffic as well. Bottom line-more space on wall if you put door on driver's side, but personal preference.

I have been told that curb side is better for your awning so drafts from semi's do not pull it loose. I think it is also safer for entering if you are pulled over on the side of the road. Seems like it lays out better in a slant to have it on the long wall also.

I just graduated from a pop up tent truck camper to a LQ trailer. I just got to say...you are going to LOVE IT! My trailer door is on the passenger side. Most of the campsites I have been to - the picnic table is usually on that side. Whatever side you end up with, you'll love not ever having to put that tent up again!

I have two trailers with entrance doors on opposite sides. On the short, short walled Exiss, having the door on the street side frees up the curbside longer wall for a kitchenette, storage and a bathroom. Installing all this equipment in this small a space, would not be possible, with a door in the middle of the long wall.

Our Sidekick has a 13' short wall and a door on the curbside. People we show with have a street side door to their LQ and awning, so we can park face to face, nose to nose, with a common area between our trailers.

On a LQ with a longer short wall, the interior layout will be the determining factor about the favourable placement of the door. Other than I explained about our Exiss, I don't particularly see any advantage of having a door on one side or the other.

I'm in the camp of having it on the driver's side as explained before it gives you a much longer long wall.  I have a 5' short wall, so having the longer wall was really important.

On a much bigger LQ, curbside is probably better for the reasons already given by other posters.

With the door on the longwall- you fall in with traditional RV style with regards to where the hookups & picnic table will be set in a campsite. Generally, folks who show can go either way with the door. Trail riders who use established campgrounds seem to prefer the longwall door option. This is likely why the large floorplans utilize it. As has been stated however, with very small plans, the shortwall door can be more efficient.

Hmmm....  all good points.  Anyone else have experience will wear and tear on the awning more so on street side vs. curb side?

We were in the same situation as you so we had our LQ trailer built with a mid tack (which we use as a mud room) and had an entrance door placed on both the curb and road side. We had awnings installed on both sides. We've been using this setup for about 4 years and haven't had any problems with either awning. The entrance on the roadside gets used about 90% of the time. For folks like us that have a hard time deciding it has worked out pretty well although if we built another one we would probably just place the entrance on the road side. Best of luck to you.

I just had an awning put on my trailer and the dealership told me to be sure and keep the awning legs (or bars - whatever they are called that attach to your trailer) tightly closed. They said many time that the vibration of the road causes the awning to release which could cause the awning be bent or torn off. So they never let a trailer leave their lot without those enclosed somehow. I used short ball bungees. You could also use velcro or zip ties.

We have a door into the LQ on each side. We have large push button awnings on both sides so we can adapt to different conditions or campsites.  Usually, we use the curbside door  more often since that is the way most of the camp sites are set up.

Tankerbell, For me, it depends on the trailer.  Like Gard, I have two trailers.  For a small LQ weekender, the door is definately best located on the street side to maximize the LQ space.  For a larger trailer, if you use the first stall as a mud room, it might be nice to have the LQ door on the curb side, especially if most of the camps are set up for curbside. I currently have curb side on my larger trailer.  I would have prefered street side and everything all on the street side.  I guess only time will tell on the curb side for me.

I bought straps with plastic clasps at the local RV store which were made to secure the awning arms. Very quickly the plastic got brittle and broke. They weren't terribly expensive but who wants to have to keep replacing them. So now I use 2 small bungee cords on each arm though they will weather and wear out also.

Without some kind of strap around them the arms vibrate and rattle when on the road. It's not surprising that over time the awning could work loose.

Currently own one of each.  Both have their advantages and disadvantages.  The two things I like about a curb side door is 1: if you have dump hoses hooked up you aren't walking over and around them (most every trailer dumps on the left side), 2: the awning is on the right side and you can see around the left side of an 8' trailer a little better while going down the road.  My advice is look at lots of trailers, then take the door that's on the trailer you like best.  They're fine on either side!!!

I am a little late on this but here is my opinion and we have owned both in large and small LQ's.

In small LQ's I like the door on the street side for the room.

But actually what works good for ME or lets say my better half is a curb side door.

While driving to or from a shoot or show at 12:00 at night and she wakes up and tells me I have to P and the closest town is either 5 miles behind us or 40 miles in front of us all I have to do is find a safe place to pull over, turn thbe flashers on and send her down the passenger side of the trailer to the door to the LQ.  Problem solved for both of us, she gets to go and I don't have to hear her for the next 40 miles.....hee hee

I don't have a LQ trailer, but I've observed a lot of people camping in them. And I think I've decided which way I want my next trailer. Maybe I'm all wet, but here's a few things that nobody has mentioned so far.

If the front of the trailer is living quarters and not where you store your tack, I think I would like the door on the street side. Then, the living and camping can be done on that side, and the horses can be tied to the curb side of the trailer where there are no drop-down windows to worry about getting hung up in lead ropes.

If the front of the trailer is just a tack room, and not for living or camping, I think it would be better to have the door on the curb side.

I have had living quarters both ways. My preference is on the curb side for my living quarters. Something was said earlier about the hookups being on the street side and that is what I didn't like about mine. In a camp ground, most of the hookups were always on the same side as my door. Also rest stops that have dumps were always that way too. When in a camp ground I was always walking over and around the sewer hose. Just didn't like it.

Non living quarters my preference is street side. It gives me the long wall in which to stack junk. As far as the traffic, I get out of the truck on that side so it didn't really make any difference.

But down around this part of the country, drop down window on the hip (curb)side is everywhere.  I will not own another trailer without them in this heat....  Also after looking thru the adds listed on this site I would say that about 60% if not more of the LQ trailers have drop down windows on the hip side....

Ditto on not wanting to live without drop windows on the hips! Both of our current trailers are equipped with drops (with screens added)  all the way around!

HTB, No way 60% in the cool environs of the PNW. We're just the opposite up here with lots of Exiss and Featherlite trailers with only sliders on the hip. You Texas folks are lucky!  I had to look almost forever to find a trailer up here that had drops on the hip. But, I'm with you.  No way would I roll in the flat land heat without rear drops.  I didn't compromise and just kept looking until I found a trailer with rear drops.
