I am a new horse husband and possibly soon to be rider who is learning about pulling horse trailers.We have a calico 3 horse slant load and I am wondering if there are any drawbacks to making a divider go all the way to the floor and using the first stall as storage for camping gear and feed ? We currently haul 1 horse and maybe a 2nd in the future.Thanks for any help.

I have a stud divider on the front stall, I works fine as long as there is nothing small enough to slide under the divider. had a nice lounge whip slide under, and the horse steped on it often enough to break it. Now I put my hay up against the divider and everything else in front or on top

I use the first stall for storage as well. Good for bales of hay,bags of shavings etc. I don't have a stud divider and really if you know how to pack it, you don't need one. If your carrying bales of hay, there is your divider right there.

So true, I was hauling a load of midget riders back from a horse show when one of the midgets accidentally slid under the divider and got stepped on by one of the horses. Poor little guy couldn't walk right for nearly a week. Midgets walk funny to begin with so this little fellow really had a hitch in his giddy-up. If you're ever hauling midgets in your trailer, make sure you use proper restraints. The bailing twine I used proved to be insufficient.

That's all we use our front stall on our three horse for. When we had the 4 horse with no bathroom that was where we kept the port-a-potty. The third stall was storage.

I use the first stall as a storage compartment too. I had them put a ramp on this excape door which makes it really handy to get to your stored equipement and also work supper well as a mud room.

You can either buy a stud divider addition for your current divider, or add a 1/2" rubber mat (floor mat) to your divider so it comes down to about an 1" off the ground. I had a stud divider in my last trailer and added a 1/2" rubber strip to the bottom so shavings wouldn't come under it. We never opened it from the horse compartment, and only from the side entrance, truly using it as a mid-tack or storage compartment. I also added D-rings to the divider so I could secure/tie down things so they wouldn't move. The rubber strip could be taken off if that stall ever needed to be used for a horse, and the D-rings were flat so they wouldn't hurt a horse.

I also only carry 2 horses in a 3h sl. I use the first stall for storage. The owner before me took a sheet of plywood and mounted it to the divider so I have a wall from the divider down to the floor. So nothing will get through it to affect the horses...I can easily take the plywood out if I need to haul another horse....I use storage bins that are stackable for the smaller items that we need to carry and have plenty of room for other things....

Our 4 horse is now a 2 horse. My husband took the stud divider and moved it back. Raised the floor with 3/4 plywood over 1x4 treated pine in three sections for easy removal. On the back of the stud divvider he attached a rubber belt 1/4" X 6" to aid in keeping the front area clean. We have had mid tacks but perfer this method better

Ditto. Just make sure you secure things to the walls, not just to each other... using utility straps or rope, not bungees... and consider the potential lethality of things like step-in fenceposts in the case of an accident. I used to carry them in the front stall but now they go either in the rear tack or in the dressing room. I figure my horse doesn't need any extra help getting hurt in a situation like that. This year I'm going to add flip-down D-rings to the slant wall and the butt-end of the first stall, as well as the long wall in my DR, so I can better secure things during travel.

We also have a 4 horse that the first 2 stall are for storage. We haul a generator usually ( no gas in it!) and it is so much easier to get it in and out this way than in a mid tack. We had a built in type but just didnt like it so we went to a portable one. But by the time we are packed for 7 to 9 days in camp those stall are full. FYI we also moved our stud wall back.

The only problem I had with mone, Was as I opened it, It would sweep all the shavings on the floor into a big pile.
It was close enough to the floor to sweep most shavings. But had just enough clearance that some got under neacth and swept into the 1st stall storage. If I was to do that again, I would do as other suggest and only access it through the escape door. Or don't use shaving on the floor.

Its funny this has come up to the top now because for us its moot now that we have discovered paking and bought a mule.Now we use all the available stalls for stock a lot of times so we have to put hay in the LQ or the back of the truck.We could use a bigger trailer but finances and too little a truck prevent upsizing at this time.I appreciate all the responses as they did help.

As suggested you can use bales of hay or straw as the divider which i have done in the past. However due to some changes we installed rubber mats along the bottom of the divider to the floor. Yes it does sweep the straw or shavings into a pile but really just kick it back in place.

Have an Exiss, 3 horse liv. quarter, use stud stall as a mud room ,and for storage for grain, slickers. coolers, etc. I screwed a length of belting to the bottom of the stud wall as sort of a sweep, and now no shavings can get to storage side.;yet stud wall can be moved for cleaning,or opened up for move hauling space when needed. It stays nice and clean and we use the outside door as access to the living quarters when it is raining or muddy outside. Works well for us..

I was just telling hubby about " the mudroom " that we have in our " new " to us trailer what a brilliant Idea ! We cannot wait until show season starts ! He was also asking if anyone has used the horse part for extra sleeping quarters...we were thinking of putting a clean plastic tarp down and blowing up some airbeds for all the teenage cowgirls that like to hang out /sleepover on show weekends .If we put an airconditioner in the LQ would it cool down the horse part? if the door was left open ?... This trailer has a four foot short wall...

We used to have a small tag along stock trailer (not insulated)and we slept in it quite comfortably. On a week long excursion, we bedded it really deep with straw. At night closed up the "windows" by sliding in some plywood cut to fit, then we forked it out, spread the straw around, inflated an air mattress and tossed it in and then put a small tent on top of it with the tent door facing forward. We could enter from the side door and had room for two lawn chairs and two coolers. I clearly remember there being frost on the ground for the first three or four mornings, and everyone at the shows saying how cold they were, but we were so toasty we'd kicked the blankets off during the night. It was quite enjoyable.
