We are looking to go somewhere in mid-September to hopefully escape some of the inevitable heat down here. What places would you go to at that time of year?

Hey, Thanks for the nice photos. That IS a place we would like to go soon although I don't think we will have enough time this trip...When we go out that way we would like to have 3 weeks available. Good luck on your hunting!

I like the mountains to escape the heat. Colorado, Wyoming is great. It's much cooler. Also have had good luck in the black Hills of South Dakota. September is a nice month there.
Closer to you would be the Smokies. I have no experience there but the elevation should mean cooler weather and those hills are beautiful.

You could visit several different camps around the Smoky Mtn National Forest. Check out Orchard Cove Stables in Townsend TN and Deep Creek Horse Camp in Bryson City NC. There are a few others too. It would not be as far to travel, but still taking advantage of cooler weather.

Thanks tom-tom...that's always been a favorite area of ours although I've not been to the places you mentioned. Our friends just got back from a trip and I think they included Orchard Cove. I haven't had a chance to speak with them yet about their trip. I guess I better...Thanks!

Camping in any one place in the wilderness for three or four weeks is not a really good idea. You damage the immediate surroundings to the point that it takes years to recover. Most rangers will insist that you move your campsite every week to ten days. That being said, the Black range in southern New Mexico or the Sangre de Christos in northern New Mexico will yield months worth of good riding. Northwestern NM, around Farmington and Aztec, provide some enchanting canyons and badlands. The Manzano Mountains of central NM have hundreds of miles of trails and some very interesting prehistoric ruins, petroglyphs, and old spanish missions.

We've been to Deep Creek - James, the host, is awesome. Husband loves it! I have a fear of drop-offs, so though the scenery and temps that time of year are wonderful, the trails are not my cup of tea. You could also ride Dupont State Forest in NC. There's no camping in the forest, but several places near by. The forest is in Brevard, NC, Land of the Waterfalls, and let me tell you - that is no joke. There are waterfalls everywhere to see on the trails. You've got to see the triple falls! It is breathtaking.

Also with the drought in NM many restrictions will be put into place, such as no open flames of any type allowed. Sept is also notorious for sudden downpours. I always link the State Fair with rainy weather. The Gila Mountians have lots of wilderness areas, a friend of ours goes bow hunting for elk in Sept and takes the horses. He usually comes back with a nice size one each year.

Mt Rogers, Vir is a great place to go in September. There are several good camps in the area. We just returned from www.rockyhollowhorsecamp.com over Memorial day weekend. Some of the trails are very rocky and some are good riding trails and the views are spectacular from the top. Temps in the 50's at night that time of yr. The Colorado rockies are quite special and my favorite place to ride the high country. But from Fl it might be a bit to far to travel.

Ok, I'm thinking about Hickory Creek in PA and then down to Iron Mtn in Va....any thoughts on these? I've heard good things about Iron Mtn. Anyone been to these places or others near them? There are so many places to choose from it's hard to make a decision sometimes, but I've got to get on it.

Going to Iron Mtn for week in June. Friends come from SC and we spend a whole week there. Just 2 more weeks and we'll be there. Sheila is a great host and all the camp sites are clean & well kept. My friends & I are of the older generation (all women no hubbies allowed) so we do feel safe. They check on us to see when we leave and when we plan to be back just in case there is any trouble, which we have had in the past with one friend getting bucked off her horse ending up with a broken arm in 3 places but she comes back every year to go again. This is our six year going.

You'll like Hickory Creek. We go there all the time. When are you going in September? We were there 2 weekends ago and Tom said they are planning some things for Labor Day weekend. Last year, they had cowboy poetry, storytelling, and singing around the campfire one evening and concert another. Maybe we could meet there.
We are planning on going somewhere in VA in July. Not sure where yet, have talked about Iron Mountain, but leaning toward Hungry Horse if we can get reservations. We are in PA and our sons live in VA Beach. We're waiting to hear from them if can meet up with us in VA for a few days.

aewsomeabby,
We are most likely going to arrive there about the 6th. That could change if my work schedule changes but looks ok so far. I try to avoid big rides although I do enjoy the entertainment they provide. I'd certainly love to meet and ride with you as we do enjoy meeting new people and riding with them. Let me know if you will be there around that time. We are planning to stay somewhere around a week. Let me know how your ride in Va goes and have a great time!

Good. We will be there then from the 4th through the 7th. I don't know what kind of rig you have but when you reserve your campsite, the campground is sort of on 3 levels. The sites 1 through 16 are all shaded, electric and water. We usually get site 9 or 10, but they started having a community campfire right across from 9. The owners, Tom and Jennifer stay in a trailer across from 9 and 10 and it has become a little busy. Everyone stops to talk. Sometimes, I like the quiet. Anyhow, sites 9 through 12 and 15 and 16 are our favorites. 15 and 16 are sort of behind the barn and a trek to the showers/restrooms which we need since we don't have a shower in our lq. The other sites listed on the website, look like they are right there, but they are actually in a lower area, sort of like a field and there is a bit of woods between them and the barn. Most of them are under trees, have elec and water, and 17 and 18 are our favorites down there. Then, there is another area that is primitive. Big field with surrounding woods and trees. It's really nice there and is a favorite of a lot of people who don't need/want hookups.
There isn't an organized ride scheduled at that time. We've never been up for one of those. Tom does have a string of horses that he takes people on rented rides, but you never see them. The concert that they tried last year had, I think, 3 bands and was not well attended by locals like they hoped. I doubt if they will try something that big again this year, but I don't know. We avoid the bull riding weekends.
Ask Tom or Jennifer where Mike and Debbie Sulkowski are camped and we can meet. You can e-mail me privately at debbiesulk@comcast.net if you have any questions.

Well, September is almost upon us and it looks like vacation is a go. I can't wait! We've decided to go to Iron Mtn in Va and then down to Leatherwood in NC. Our plan B is Hickory Creek in PA (you always need a plan B). Anyone going to be at either of these places from the 6-18? We would love to meet ya.
