You will have to advertise outside of your area, which has some of the highest unemployment in the nation. HTW is widely read and other Internet sites are as well. This particular site has done well for us, we've purchased two trailers and sold one through its advertising.

A trailer such as yours priced correctly, should interest people willing to drive to your location. One buyer just told us of driving sixteen hours, to purchase a used trailer. Trying to sell within your area will be extremely difficult. The Internet has a world wide readership and the advertising is very inexpensive, for the amount and diversity of the people you can access.

I went a similar problem this year.  I paid cash for my trailers and other toys.  But this recession has put a bind on my finances.  So I put my LQ trailer up for sale and when it sold bought a used non-LQ trailer that was half the price of my Living Quarters trailer. With the cash I got out of it, I was able to take care of some other obligations.

I put my trailer on several websites.  It took about 4 months before I got a serious offer.  I got a lot of offers that didn't make sense, that I had to just ignore. I hated to sell a 1 year old trailer, because I took a $4000 loss and I know if I try to go buy a new LQ trailer the price will be higher than what I paid 2007. But I just had to tell myself that in my ultimate financial situation it was the best decision.

You need to look at what is the best course for you. I don't encourage anybody to give items back to their banks. But if that is the choice you have to pursue, go talk to your bank and be proactive about it.  It will be much less damaging to your credit if the bank shows a deed in liew of foreclosure vs 4 months of late payments and a repossession. 

Any thing that is negative on your credit will affect your ability to borrow money in the future.  If you own your home and don't anticipate having to take out a new mortgage in the next 7 years. You could take a hit on your credit report and 7 years from now it will wash it self off. If you think that you may be required to move (because of job changes or family needs) in the next couple of years.  It could really destroy your ability to get a new mortgage. This may force you to not take a career advancement because you would n't be able to buy a home where ever you had to move to. Or you may have to pay a sub-prime rate on your next mortgage. We are even seeing companies pulling credit reports as a back ground check on potential new employees.  A bad credit report may be the reason for not getting a new job.

We are in a recession. The value of almost everything is receeding.  You can expect to loose money on the trailer. It doesn't matter that you only used it twice. Recognize this and come to terms with the loss. Decide what you will consider a reasonable loss.  If you have a loan on the trailer, you may be getting offers that are for less than you owe. You will have to decide if it's worth it to you to get out of the monthly payments, but have to write the bank a check for the deficit on the loan when you sell the trailer. But sometimes selling it for a smaller loss now will be better than selling it for even bigger loss later on. I don't see December as a great month to sell a trailer. People are spending their money on Christmas.  If you can hold on till spring, When folks start thinking of being out with their horses, you may get more money for your trailer.  If the recession deeping and things continue to get worse, you may get less than what you can get today.

I'm a builder, I find that people are no longer looking for good deals on homes. They are now looking for absolute STEALS. But there is always a buyer if the price is right. Only you know what is the right choice for you. Take a loss on your trailer or take a hit on your credit.

Can you split the payments with someone?  That way both of you will use the trailer and share expenses?  If I had some extra money I would be able to help but I'm just like you.  Good Luck with whatever you decide.

Another problem is that financing is more available and cheaper when buying a new vehicle than a used one.

You could try posting it on as many Craigslists as you can throughout the US.  For instance in Texas, try to find the CList around Pilot Point - where there are a large number of high-end farms. Ocala, FL. In AZ in the Phoenix area for Cave Creek, etc.

Have you worked with any national magazines? Western Horseman, Equus, Horse & Rider, that type?

Are you willing to deliver it? Add in a load of hay if you're advertising in Florida or the southwest.

Kudos for trying to not advertise via the forum, says alot about your ethics and should go a long ways in establishing trust with potential buyers who might be on the forum.

Two ideas in helping sell it:

1) Include a link to your HTW ad in your signature line and make sure to include it in all your posts.  Its not offensive, in that someone interested can click on it, otherwise its just part of your signature line.

2) Offer free delivery.

I like the suggestion of finding somebody to share the trailer with.  A good friend of mine recently bought a $100,000+ trailer. He partnered with a fellow who could afford it, but didn't want to use it much or take care of it.  My friend gets to use it 80-90% of the time, his friend rarely uses it but gets 1st choice when he does want it. He is extremely fussy about taking care of stuff,  has the money to fix anything he breaks.  My friend has two non-LQ trailers he can use if the primary person takes the big trailer. So it works out great for the two of them.

I wish I had some spare cash laying around.

We were planning on purchasing a 4H LQ off a friend this next year (before all the economic disasters became a reality) and now I've pretty much pushed off those thoughts as well.

Glad that you found a hauler. If you hadn't, I was going to suggest a friend's brother in Otisville. He moves RVs for people, between campsites and homes and/or storage spots. He is "horsey"...  : )

As a dealer, I get calls from people in your predicament every week.  Normally, they have high dollar trailers that they bought with no down payment or no payments for 6 months, deferred interest, etc.  In other words, they bought if they could afford the payment at the time, but set themselves up to have no equity in the trailer if they had a change in income.   Your trailer will probably sell if you can get it under $50k and take the hit.  It's a buyer's market, and right now, people are buying on price!  I would definitely take the hit on price before I hurt my excellent credit.  With your good credit, your bank will probably let you settle for a lesser price and allow to pay out the balance with much cheaper payments.  At least you have a 4-Star, that will help.  Free delivery will help too.  We'll be seeing more and more of this until the economy straightens up.
