I HAVE A 8 YRS TWH I HAVE RIDEN IN THE MOUNTAIN MANY MILES WITH NO PROBLEM, THE END OR LAST SEASON HE TRIPPED ON HIS LEFT HOCK, DID NOT THINK MUCH ABOUT IT AT THE TIME, WHEN I BEGIN THIS YR ON SHORT RIDES DID IT ONCE OR TWICE, THEN I RODE HIM ABOUT 12 MI AND HE TRIPPED 4 OR 5 TIMES, I DONT KNOW WHAT YOU CALL THIS BUT IT SEEMS THAT HIS LEFT FOOT TURNS BACK UNDERNEATH CANT SEE HAPPEN MORE GOING DOWN HILL WALK OR GAITING ANYONE KNOW WHAT WILL HELP THANKS TRAILBLAZIER O6

How do you trip on your hock? Are you saying he strained it in some way? Ya know.....it almost sounds like a locked stifle but I could be wrong. Make a call to your vet.....

Not sure if this is what your horse is doing or not; hope it makes sense trying to describe. I had a gaited horse that began to go off his gait on a rear leg. What was happening, the leg would appear to drag or get left behind. In doing so, the foot would roll over into the front of the pastern before stepping forward. Took several vet calls and misdiagnosis till finally a vet recognized this as being one of the clinical signs for EPM. Performed a spinal tap to confirm. Lengthly and expensive to treat but now horse is sound and usable. As others have said, have a vet check it out. Good Luck, hope it is something minor.

My Walker gelding does this same thing. It seems he catches his toes on the rear feet--kind of like stubbing his toe. We try to keep his toes shorter on the hind feet and if they get longer he trips worse. The last Walker I owned did the same thing. Interesting!

Trailblazer, we experienced a very similar issue last fall with our MFT mare. She had pulled a hip mucsle, but it appeared as a hock issue... very odd. She had several treatments with a horse chiropractor and is now sound. My vet and Chiro worked together on the treatment plans. I too was concerned about EPM as the symptoms were somewhat similar.

I have a 8 month mule colt out of a saddlebred mare that also has a problem with his left rear leg. The only time I notice it is after I keep him stalled up for about 12 hours. When he comes out he drags his rear foot for a minute or two. After he moves around abit it starts working again. I never have noticed it unless hes been put in the stall. I was hoping he would out grow it, does anyone have any experience with something like this?

Sounds like a stifle problem too me.My mare had this.It is where the mucsle surronding the joint is not stong therefore it slips out of place now and then.If it does it frequently it can cause soreness in the stifle area.Kinda like a pulled muscle.When the stifle locks it does feel like a the horse trips.The stifle will lock or catch for a split second. Treatment is hill work.Long slow hills at the walk to srengthen the mucsle in the area to hold the joint in place.It is very much like a dog that has hip displasa.Where the hip joints come out of the socket.The vet can also give a hormone injection which will cause the horse to retain some fluid around the joint to help hold it in place while it is strengthend.

i think what happen, the horse had not been riden much for winter and i took him 0n a long ride about 12 mi. and gaited him the most of the way over and when i notice this i walked him most the way back home i rode sometimes later a short ride and he did fine, i took the shoes off and trim his feet and only ride him approx. 1 hr at most about three times a wk. rode yesterday for 1 hr or longer at walk and slow gait he did not trip the frist time i am going to take it easey for a while with him and let him build up before i trail ride him again

My wifes mare had the same problem last year. Vet said it was the stifle. Best remedy is exercise, lots of it to build up the muscle. She also had sat in the pasture all winter an got fat and lazy. Finally got it worked out in August, but then we got busy and weren't able to ride much until mid October. Same problem again, so it is an ongoing thing.
