While we were gone my filly rubbed off about a 4inch area of her mane. She is supposed to be shown at the end of Sept. Any suggestions on how to get it to grow back to a decent length by then?

Hair dressing ointment, looks kinda blue and can be found in the ethnic section. It grows hair like mad. You'll want to trim the mane very short...less than 4 inches to minimize the difference in length between the regular mane and the rubbed out part.

I used M-T-G from Shapleys(I think that's it) when mine rubbed out his mane..seemed to help. I have also seen good results with Eqyss conditioner but it was quite a bit more expensive. Put them on a Biotin and/or flax seed supplement if they aren't on one already. And make sure to keep her away from whatever she rubbed on, of course!

Go to the hair dressing section of your drug store and get the cheapest ethnic scalp/hair growth cream (in a jar) - usually has coconut oil or carrot oil. Works like a dream. Our horse had his tail chewed off one time and here's what I did: cut extra strands from underneath his mane (it was long) and used fiber wood glue to glue about 30 strands (each with about 10 hairs) onto the tips of his tail hair at different heights. Basically, they were "extensions". You couldn't even see them and I braided the tail to protect them They stayed in for over 3 weeks and after 2 baths!

Besides the topical, give her about 1/2 cup of Black Oil Sunflower seeds & 1/2 to 1 cup of flax seeds each day too. My horses manes & tails grow like crazy on these.

Thanks y'all. My neighbour was feeding for us while we were on vacation and he fed my old mare to close to the fillys pen. She was sticking her head through the bars to eat the old girls hay.

I'm going to try it. I'm thinking you would just follow the directions.
My mare rubbed part of her tail off. I wormed her, cleaned her teets, cleansed the area and applied a topical solution for rash, bites, irritation etc. It seems to have stopped but I still don't know the true cause. She has never done this before.

I'd put in on everytime you are around your horse. I put it on after the evening ride and rinse ritual. Let the horse get a little dry and smear it on, then fly spray. I find it tends to melt in the heat of the workout and leave a huge greasy area so I put it on after so it stays in place.

Gone, in my experience tail rubbing is a common sign of pinworms. Worming was the right thing to do but make sure your wormer specifically states that it treats pinworms.

If your horse's tail is white or light colored, it may not be worms, but a sunburn that is itching him/her. Our spotted horse was rubbing his tail because his skin was "peeling" from being sunburned. We use diaper rash ointment (zinc oxide) to prevent this.
