I used "Kiltix" once when I was going to a notoriously tick infested area for a week-long trail ride. I dripped it on my horse's poll, withers, croup and base of his tail. The spot on his croup got a raised bump, so I never used it again. But, I didn't get any ticks either, while lots of my buddies did! I guess a trial (not anywhere near the saddle area) before your ride would be smartest.

I have used equi-spot which worked well. It also seemed that I didn't have much problem with pesky bugs while riding either. Didn't notice any side effects.

Perhaps cheaper and VERY effective is using Adams Flea and Tick Control for dogs. Ticks get very bad here in Kansas and the vet said the formula was safe for horses. I sprayed the underside of their manes and along the dock and tail bone. It was a horrible tick year and I had no problems. Very long lasting also, probably every 2-3 weeks depending on rain.

So, if you use the spot on fly control, do you not use fly spray at all? My daughter shows her horse and it is just routine to spray him with fly spray before a class. I looked on the package and it doesn't say.
We bathe him a lot and also wondered if it would wash it off?

Read the individual labels about whether you can get the area wet after application. Usually the spot-on stuff is pretty pricey and I'd sure like it to last through some sweat, a bath, or light rain without having its effects wear off.

Been using spot on for a couple of years - no ticks. Or, no live ticks. Every once in awhile we'll find a dead tick. We reapply every two weeks. Keep the horses in a stall for an hour or so and let it do its work - otherwise they'll roll in the dirt and may roll it off - Then let 'em out. They're usually out 24/7. Bathe them as normal after a couple of days. Sweat doesn't seem to wash it off either. We have loads of ticks in Missouri. But our horses don't. One horses has severe allergic reactions to fly bites. So, we also use fly spray. The spot-on doesn't really repel flies.
