HELP HELP!!  I sent my husband and my "new to me"2005 Suburban to the hitch place to get a hitch and a sway bar.................he came back with a big old Drawtite WD hitch..............and now I have only 3" clearance!!  Obviously, this will not work.  The butt end of the hitch sticks DOWN so there is only 3" clearance, and the chain end of the bars do too....  Personally, I do not think I need/want WD hitch.  Trailer is a 2horse BP Gore with dressing room..weighs 3100#.  I haul one 800lb pony....

There is no equalizer hitch place within 100 miles.  I have heard these are very good to use.

Any ideas for me?  Here is a link to pictures of the rig.

I would say that you need to keep it on there.  However, is there any way to switch it around and adjust the height of the hitch?  It appears to me that the front of the trailer is sitting too low due the height of the hitch.  I just wondered if it could be flipped and bolt it back together giving you additional height in the front.  If you could do this, you should be able to help your clearance issues.

I too think it looks nose down.  I think this hitch is a safe configuration and it will keep your trailer from ripping you off the road in a sway, but then again I value safety before looks.  I'm very worried about the clearance between your sway bars and the ground it looks to be lower than your hitch!  I agree your hitch should not be the lowest part on your tow vehicle.

If they measured your hitch height BEFORE they placed the weight of the trailer on the ball then it has not been properly installed.  The ball height will be indicated on your trailer, it should be the height from the ground to the top of the ball when the loaded(including your pony and tack)trailer is on the ball.  I take the height and increase it by one half inch to three quarters inch to include the additional metal from the trailer hitch for ease of measuring.  If this is not done when the trailer is hitched the tow vehicle "squat" is not accounted for thus placing the trailer nose down which only gets lower with increased load.

A second way to "check your level" is to place a level on the tongue of the trailer while hitched on level ground.  Trailers that are nose down have wear issues with their tires and front axles, not to mention an increased fuel consumption.

Go back to the place that installed it and have them flip the insert over so that it goes up instead of down.  Then, when they reattach the ball mount, it needs to be in a position where the top of the ball is higher.  Your trailer will not haul well when it is lower in the front.  It needs to be level or slightly above.

Also, the ball mount has adjustment so that it can be perfectly vertical or slant a bit to the rear.  Look at a couple of your pictures and you will see that the ball is going into the coupler at an angle.  Not good.  You want the ball to go vertically into the coupler.  It is just a matter of adjustment.

What you have is a weight distribution hitch, also known as an equalizer and sometimes called sway bars.  Drawtite is an excellent brand.  You just didn't get a good installation, or perhaps they were guessing at the required height if they didn't have your trailer.  When we don't have a trailer to measure, we set a hitch/ball so that it measures roughly 19" from the ground to the top of the ball.  When you hook your trailer up, the weight of the trailer may change that measurement, depending on how soft the suspension is on your vehicle.  If you jack up the trailer (while it is coupled to the vehicle) so that it is level or a bit above, hook up your weight distriibuting bars at the snuggest chain loop, it should ride level when you retract the jack.

GREAT INPUT!  Thank you all so very much!!

So, next chapter in the hitch saga:  Husband took it back today (and, yes, we took the trailer and suburban in both times.....just no pony, LOL)  The head guy was there today, and took one look..............DEFINITELY not going to work.  Next, they took the whole thing off, put on a regular hitch, hooked up, and the back of the Sub. went down 5 inches.........  Not a good plan either.  Steve suggested that rather than getting different shocks, he wanted to try a different WD hitch.............so, that was the next step.

OK, now the clearance is 6", my husband says it pulls GREAT.............and I will take it to the barn tomorrow and see how it does with the pony inside.  (Still looks a bit downhill to me, but maybe it is where it is parked, plus it was pretty dark...)

Will report back tomorrow............ Again, thank you to one and all for your help.
