I have a 2003 Kiefer Built Genesis 4 horse with weekender. We just had a big hail storm and the roof is dented up pretty good.  It knocked off some of the roof seam seals as well. Two sides of the trailer (head and both back doors) suffered some damage as well to the white skin.

My insurance company isn't quite sure how they will price the repair or what repairs may be needed.

What are my repair options?

Possible cost?

Thanks

What are my repair options?    Take a cash settlement, repair the caulking and use it as is...  Probably cost more to replace all the damaged skin than what the trailer's worth.

Possible cost?   Take it to a horse trailer repair facility and get an estimate. Ins. co. may total it out...

I called one trailer place and they wanted $65 to estimate the repairs. My insurance company told me to not pay for an estimate. Is this common practice with trailer repair places? I have never been charged to have a car or truck estimated for body repairs or even mechanical repairs when the issue was known. (unknown mechanical repairs that require diagnostics require a fee which is fine)

(sorry for the blank post, got a message that I had to edit it within 3 minutes)

Well- have a friend who runs a trailer shop. He told me one time it would take him 45 minutes at least to very accurately estimate my hail damage. And he knew beynd a shadow of a doubt he wouldn't get the job because it would total my trailer (new top & side). So yes- I guess if the shop you spoke to is realistic, they need to do that. My friend has, but he gives it back when you repair it. They just get tired of hail estimates for the insurance company that don't actually get fixed. I guess I understand, working for free isn't as fun as it used to be.

The manufacturer will likely give you an estimate if you tell them exactly what needs replacing.

Thanks horsey1 for the info.

This trailer shop said the estimate was for any repair, not just hail damage. I didn't know this was common to charge.

I had hail damage to my steel trailer that had ping marks.  The paint chipped off on the top and also on the underside in the horse area.

My insurance handled it as if the trailer had to go back to the manufacturer to be fixed.  To be fixed they'd need to send the trailer back to the manufacturer and have the roof peel off and since it was a living quarter trailer, the cabinets would have to be reinstalled, electric, insullation etc.  They even accounted for the cost of shipping the trailer to the manufacturer.

In the end I decided not to have them fix the pings since it was on the roof and not seen well.  I had my husband sandblast and repaint the trailer's roof.  I eventually had to do the underside in the horse area too since it all started the rust where it had pings.

I don't remember the exact settlement but I used some of the money for material to fix it and I remember I ended up keeping $5,000.00 to put in the bank to apply towards my future truck when I bought it.  That was ten years ago to this month.

My prev trailer had hail damage. The cost to repair was extensive as someone else said they send back to mfger and have to remove living qtrs. we got 15k from insurance because it was "totaled" bought it back for 3k and sold it two years later for 12k. If ours is as bad as you say, I would think you are in the same position.

Had a 2H GN trailer with weekender quarters hailed on severely. The insurance company totaled it. We dickered a bit on value as I thought they were comparing it to a cheaper brand of trailer. I took the lesser amount and kept the trailer. Perfectly usuable though the fiberglass roof probably neeeded some attention. Still didn't leak and everything worked as it should. Sold it a few years later. It was still a very nice trailer.

Question buyers had was does it sell with a salvage title? I wasn't sure. I'm told if it is that buyers may not be able to insure the trailer.
