Bought a new 2008 Ford 450...truck only has right at 732 miles on it and hauled to a horse show yesterday and ended up broke down on the side on the road. Engine light came on and all the sudden I hear this big BOOM from under the hood. Truck kept running and I pulled off to the side of the highway and opened the hood....no smoke...could not see anything that really stood out, but I am a woman and was alone so really did not know what I was looking for anyway. So I was worried about sitting on the side of the highway with horses on the trailer and decided to try to make it to the next exit....it ran, but I could only get up to 40 MPH...just had no power. I finally pulled off to a gas station and called Roadside Assistance to get a tow truck on the way and had a friend coming from a hour and a half away to get me and my horses. I sat there for 3 hours and tow truck never did show up.....and to top it all off. I sat on the phone on hold with Roadside Assistance so long, my cell phone went dead. I ended up leaving it there and the tow truck did finally make it to pick it up and will be hauling it to the nearest Ford dealership first thing Monday morning......has anyone else had trouble with the 08 Ford F450's?? What in the world could this have been???

Sorry to hear of your problems with a brand new truck ...

I would offer some advice for the next trip out with the rig.

1.  Get a car charger for your cell phone for each of your vehicles.  I can never remember to keep the darn thing with me so I have three of them.  I got them off of E-bay pretty cheap.  (Wife has the same phone as I for this reason)

2.  Sign up for USRider.  They WILL tow your truck and Trailer.

Thanks....I just got a new phone and the stupid charger I had with me was to my old phone and did not fit...I will surely make sure next time I have the correct charger with me....Also, I have already gotten US Rider to send me some information and I am DEFINITELY going to join!! I usually never haul alone, and the one time I did....this happened in a brand new truck! I am just sick over it.

I also have a 2008 Ford 450 4x4 dually. It is a Job#2. Mine is the high tow rating with the 4.88 rear end.

1) My first trip out with the stock trailer, the truck blew sooty unburnt diesel fuel down the whole rt side of my trailer. That was a 700 mile round trip.

2) It drove all over the road since I got it. Rain and rutted roads made it hard to keep in the road where it belonged. They finally resolved the issue at 5000 miles which was the third time in the shop for the same problem. I left the truck and trailer there and told them just to keep the truck if they couldn't fix it. They said they hated calling the "hotline" with problems since it caused them grief. I said if not fixed I would call the attorney general that would surely cause them alot more grief!

3)Mileage was 6mpg. I am now up to 10.9 mpg but not hauling the LQ trailer on it at all yet.  I have almost 6000 miles on it now.

All the issues have finally been resolved by my Ford dealership except they want to reprogram it for better fuel mileage. Oh, another thing, I am paying for GAP insurance, but they still have not gotten the GAP underwriter to allow a F450.  They cut it off at the F350. My dealer is STILL working on this even though I bought it Feb 14th.

On top of this, I am hesitant to sell my other dually until this one is performing as their advertisements state. Plus, I am still pulling my LQ trailer everywhere with the Freightliner since the 450 is not as great as they made it sound like it would be. If I knew what I know now, I would have just bought a 350 since the 450 was alot more money, gets worst mpg, doesn't qualify for gap insurance, and I will still need the Freightliner to pull the LQ trailer .

Yeah....I was getting 7.8 mpg pulling a 3 horse LQ trailer..10ft shortwall. I was not happy about that at all either. They said it will get better with more miles, but I just don't see it getting that much better....thank goodness I still have my Dodge as back up!!

What was it that was causing it to drive all over the road cause I have noticed that it is hard to handle when there are ruts and such and just thought maybe it was due to the dual tires....this is my first dually.

I have had this happen with my 06 F-250.  I was driving down the road and it sounded like I had a tire blow out.  The engine light came on and it would run to about 40 just like you mentioned.  In my case, a hose that runs from the turbo came off.  I was accelerating pretty hard when it happened with me.  I had to let the truck sit and cool.  I teach high school ag and managed to call one of my students to come lend a hand.  It took the two of us to get the hose back on.  Once we did that and tightened it back on, I had no problems after that. It will get your attention when it first happens to it. Hope this is all that it was for you. If so, it will be an easy fix.

It was all over the road because the "toe in" was set wrong. The dealer seems to think it happened when it was getting unloaded from the hauler. Pulling a trailer made it 10X worst to keep in the road. But, they did resolve the issue on the last trip back ton the dealer. I can now drive one handed in the rain pulling the aluminum stock trailer. So far, that is the only one I have pulled with it. But, I am headed to OKC this week to pick up our new 4H. Hopefully the trip will be uneventful, but I do have US Rider.......just in case!

You're not the first New Ford I"ve heard of or seen on the side of the road with a trailer and broke down. I haven't seen alot of new Fords lately, don't know what the problem is but alot of folks are very unhappy with them. Ford should of stuck and stayed with the ole' 7.3l, why they ever got rid of that motor is beyond me. I still have my '97 7.3l with 143,000 miles on it and still tows the horses and cattle like the day we got it.......................

If the mileage is that bad with the 6.0 diesel, then what kind of mileage would you get with the V-10 gasser, in the same truck with 4.88 gears?

Thanks for all the info.....hopefully I will get some news today on what was wrong...they hauled it to a Ford dealership that is about an a hour and a half from my home....I think I will be calling the local dealership I bought it from to go get it when they are done with it. I should not have to spend my money in fuel to go get a brand new truck that broke down as much as we paid for that thing!!

Your description of the issue does sound like the intercooler boot coming off...if that is the case it is a simple and quick fix. Were you going up a hill or accelerating when this happened?

For the life of me, I don't understand why the major diesel truck mfg don't add a gauge package so owners can watch the critical metrics of the engine. When accelerating hard or going up hills with heavy loads the "boost" pressure builds...that is what blows intercooler hoses. Could be the hose wasn't attached properly from the factory.

I agree with Rattler. In my case the engine had less than 2500 miles on it when it went out.  The hose connection was not tight.  After that I went back through the engine and checked the remaining connections.  With the location of mine, it could have been hit during assembly and knocked loose.  I hope this is the case for you.

They replaced the 7.3L because it couldn't meet 2007 emissions, just like the 6.0 won't meet 2010 emissions. That's how I understand it.

Yes, I was coming off the exit and getting onto the interstate so I was accelerating to get up speed. It is finally at a Ford Dealership in Auburn, AL now.....hope to find out something soon!

First of all, who ever told you that it would get better mileage, you better have it in writing!  THEY DON'T AND WILL NEVER GET BETTER than the ol' ones!  Thank the government for that!  If you was lucky enough to get one with 4.10 gears you will get around 10 or so loaed and should get close to 14 unloaded.  I have owned all of the "big 3" and the only mileage came from the GM line, but I had trouble hauling the weight with the GM!  I went DODGE cab n chassis and it will pull a house down, but the mileage is around 11 loaded with a 18,770lb trailer and can get right at 15 unloaded with the cruise set on 70!

Ten to one the turbo intercooler tube blew off. Probably a "monday morning build) and wasn't tightened to correct torque at the factory. Minor issue, easily fixed. Good luck.
