My wife finally took the plunge, getting back into horse ownership after 25 years of being unable to do so. She's got experience that I don't have: I have a bunch to learn about horses and what it takes to live with them. We bought a 6-month-old weanling 6 months ago. Our good neighbors across the road have 6 head, and they boarded Sassy for us while I built our fence and stable. That in itself was a learning experience. We just got a trailer which won't need TOO much work to put it into service. Meanwhile, my wife spends a lot of time working with Sassy in the neighbor's round pen and elsewhere. I guess she did a pretty good job preparing Sassy for the first farrier's visit: she took her first trim without a single complaint. Anyhow, I'm looking forward to learning more and settling into this new lifestyle, and getting to know you folks (and pick your brains) in the process.

Welcome to the board. We have quite a few horse savvy folks on here. I have been around horses 40+ yrs and still feel like I am learning. With horses you always learn something new and have to keep an open mind. I truly believe horses own us, and not vice versa. It sounds like your wife has a great head on her shoulders and is doing well with your filly. That is awesome. Oh, yeah...welcome to the family, the motto is "Equus Keepus Brokus"...lol... you will soon learn that term well!

Now it's probably going to be like when I hit base reception at the USAF basic training station at Lackland AFB back in the early 60's. The reception team entered our bus and the sergeant in charge gave us a friendly welcoming speech and ended it by stating that these were probably the last kind words we would hear in the 8 weeks while there. He was right. And several on this board don't mind jumping on you if you hit a nerve or disagree with their opinions.

Welcome, your wife is a brave soul after taking 25 years off to jump-in with a 6 month old! I found as I aged that I learned to love older horses or maybe I realized that I didn't "bounce" like I did as a kiddo, like wine they do get better with time!

Welcome to the crazy world of horses.....There's a lot of good information here and also a lot of good people.... Congrats to your wife!!!! Once you have horses in your blood it's hard to stay away from them.....YES we all have an addiction 4 hoof fever...

I second that!! I just finished a year with my new gelding. Got him last year at 4yr old , never been saddled or handled much at all.....was a long way to the ground from 16h several times, but we have come to a mutual agreement....he likes me and I like him.....so now I got me a good one that will probably outlive me, but I wont be starting a young horse ever again.

I forgot to say how cool I think the group motto is. It's true, too! For exactly that reason, I haven't eaten since January! (glances down at belly) Um, would ya maybe believe since March? :-)

arinekhen: Don't worry about stepping on toes. Say what you feel. With horses no matter what you will not always agree with the proper way to do anything...lol...
We just went to Equine Affaire in Columbus, and according to every trainer/clinician/instructor "their way was the right way". I always find what works for me and my horse may not work for you and your horse.
The best advice is to take a little here and there, apply what works for you and is safe for you and your horse.

Take what you can from all the training styles, and all the philosophys.....then make your tool box to work with your situation and your horse and desires. It is nor whether you are "new natural horsemanship", or common sense to you style, use what works for you. I got my first horse at age 54, and have become so involved and soooo broke, that I am having the time of my life at 62 on my lil Arab mare.

Well, if you live in S. Ill. and live anywhere around Eddyville, you are in a good place to learn lots about horses. I have several friends that live there, and would be glad to help you in anyway.

I'm so glad to hear you and mrstacticalmedic say that sort of thing. I have tried to encourage Tish along those lines, that she's not gonna agree with everything people tell her, that she needs to pick and choose from the advice based on what she feels works best for her and Sassy. Thanks for showing that I'm not crazy for thinking that way. Well, either that, or we're ALL crazy. Ha Ha!
