Welcome!  I know the guys & gals w/ the real nack at this stuff will respond soon.  I am by no means an expert.  However, I have a 18hh Tb/PerchX and went w/ the 7'6 Featherlite 3h slant.  My guy fits just fine but I wish I would have gotten the slightly wider, 8' I think.  If you are into searching, there are threads on this... I posted w/ the same type question back about a yr ago (gosh, time flies).  From what I remember, there's a lot more to fitting a horse than just the height.  I know a few dealers told me my guy would be just fine in the 7'.  Kind of glad I didn't listen to them though.  Good luck!

My wife's paint is also 16 h 3" and is uncomfortable riding in a 7' high trailer. He naturally has a high stance and trailers better in the 7 1/2'.

I would think the natural stance of your horse, would determine if he will be uncomfortable trailering for any length of time with his head lowered. How well he rides will also determine how high the roof will have to be. If he is constantly moving and doesn't settle down, he will need as much room as possible. We once had a Belgian 17h mare that trailered well in a 7' trailer, so each horse is different.

also consider the width (just another decision to add to your list.)

i have some large (17H) horses.  i can cram my quiet 24 yr old into my old BP, which is not quite 7' in height, but it is the width of the trailer that is the problem. just recently bought a used 7'6" high, and 7'6" in width with NO MANGERS. i know people will tell you the mangers are just located where the head and neck go, so it shouldn't be a problem, but i wouldn't do mangers unless you go with 8' wide.  (the extra height is also good for more air circulation, an important consideration for hot, humid weather.)  good luck.

I have 3 very large horses- 1 Belgian Draft and 2 Warmbloods- I purchased the Featherlite Model 8549- The Big Horse Trailer (3 horse slant) and it is 8 ft. wide 7'6" tall and MOST IMPORTANT (in my opinion) is the Stalls are 50" wide... All the horses fit great in this big trailer.  The back stall is even larger than the front two.  It was the largest-widest- trailer I could find in my area.  Horses love it and I do too!!  Don't just think of the height, it's the width of the stalls that is important.

Could you do it ...yes.  I'd only put the big boy in the last stall, last in and first out a perfect place for rowdy riders anyways.

What I would add to my must have list is a ramp.  Those big boys step down off a tall trailer and bust their pole...when the feet go down the head goes up, SMACK!  (There's a reason they make bumpers for heads and they don't work FYI!)  Little cow ponies can jump in and out without busting their poles but the tall horses can't.

I would agree with what most people posted here about width. With big horses the width is very important, especially if you travel long distances. If your TB is long bodied and has a long neck he will most likely fit best in an 8ft wide trailer with wider stalls. If you only plan on hauling two horses, you could consider the 7ft trailer with one of the dividers removed giving the horse a double stall. I have a couple of big draft crosses and they do well in my 8ft wide 7'1" trailer although your horse being almost 17 hands might like the extra height better as well.
Good luck with your purchase.

I have to agree with the last couple of post, I don't think the width is a problem, a 7' wide trailer will have and 8' long slantwall, when you factor in the last stalls width it would be enough for a very, very large horse. The problem comes in the hieght, just as huntseat has eluded to when the horse steps down off the rear of the trailer the head will go up, and at 16.3 he is already close to the ceiling. I bought a 7'6" trailer for this very reason and also had a ramp put on it, due to a real nice mare I had, her unloading habits were awful, she was older, so I wasn't going to change her, she was the best roping horse I ever owned, so in my mind she deserved the extra room to do whatever she wanted.
