My husband has finally agreed to getting a LQ trailer (for myself and two daughters.) He is suggesting having one built out so we get exactly what we want. I saw an earlier post listing conversion companies up north. How about names of companies in Texas area? Do RV places ever build out living quarters in horse trailers? Neither my husband nor I are handy with construction of any type.

If I were in Texas as you are,i would certainly check with Outlaw Conversions in Stephensville.We had a trailer w/one of their conversions and they really do good work.Probably fairly pricey too.

Yes, I have seen conversions by Outlaw and they are really nice...and yes, a bit pricey.
Which brings me to my second question: why is it, that foot for foot, the cost of an RV interior is so much less expensive than living quarters for a horse trailer? I am guessing the exterior of RV's is different material (aluminum vs. ???) but what else am I missing? Is it just that the markets are so different?

That my dear that is the million dollar question, you can buy a brand new camper 16' long for $8,900 no slide, but does include the trailer frame, axles, tires, hitch ect.... We looked at one 3 days ago, very nice camper, with nice fabrics ect...
I say they charge it, because the market is paying it.

That is exactly what we're doing. We're in CT - not TX - but the only horse trailer dealer that would do a conversion wanted to charge us $12,000 and wouldn't let us do any of the work ourselves. I called an RV shop called R & R Customs and the guy was GREAT. Very reasonable, loads of free advice on doing stuff ourselves, and willing to do the things we didn't want to. We have a 3-horse with a dressing room and are having R & R move the wall between the DR and the horse area to make a 2-horse with a 7' short wall LQ. They're also doing the plumbing and electrical and running the propane lines. So definitely check into the RV shops around you, we have found them very willing to work with us. Good luck!

I don't know if Missouri is south enough for you, but do give those folks at the WhinnyCargo at Ozark MO I believe, a call before you make a final choice, they will sure work with you and you get quality for what you spend your money on with them. Absolutely check with em before you get all done shopping around....(and I don't even live in MO!)

I should add...
Stampede hasn't responded to my email so I do not know anything about their prices.
Duster and Outlaw are both pretty pricey (Duster does Bloomer's work).
Bunkhouse had the best quote, but I've got varying opinions on their work.
Champion's quote wasn't bad (rec'd it through a different trailer dealer who was going to have them do the work)
WTC was pretty reasonable as well.
Texas Trailers Unlimited had a comparable price to Bunkhouse (just a tad higher).
All of these were for my own, very basic weekend package. Just a rough guesstimate of places you may want to check with first, depending on what you want to spend.

4K Conversions in Oklahoma also gave me a very good quote.
We are working on doing our's on our own. Its very basic and we've got friends with electrical background so hopefully it turns out just fine without the extra cost of labor.

There is a place in Crockett doing conversions now too. I saw one of the trailers last week and they had done a great job on it, don't know how pricey they are tho. http://www.cowboytrailers.net

There is a place in north alabama called Wray bros inc. That does super jobs on trailers they have a factory were there assembly lined very nice jobs are done in there i actually walked the plant a couple of times i think they have the contract for featherlite or some aluminium dealer were they do all living quarters for them

They do very nice, quality work as well. They came highly recommended to me by a friend. Their prices are a little on the high end of the spectrum compared to many others I looked into in Tx.

Try Southwest Conversions....They have a website and Scott, The owner, is very easy going. They do a lot of horse trailers and I think they are reasonable. They can do anything from the cheap stuff to the expensive!

In answer to why Horse trailer Conversions are more expesive... (not trying to offend any RV owners, we own one ourselfs). Alot of RV's use vinyl wrap for most of their cabintry which is definetly cheaper than going with solid wood. They also cut alot of corners with the electrical wiring. Look at the wiring in the walls of an RV and then look at the wiring inside a quality Horse trailer LQ. There are more examples I could list but I hope this helps explain why. One last thing though. Check out the Warranty that the company offers. If they only warranty it for 3 years keep looking. You want a conversion that the company is willing to standby. There are companies that offer lifetime warranties for original owner. If you are going to shell out 10-20,000 for a conversion and you have a problem with it in a few years, that warranty is very valuble.

Warranties are great IF the company is still in business when you have problems. I'd look for conversion companies that have been around 5 years or more and have a GOOD reputation. (Ask for customers names and call them). There are so many new startups and closures every year, you need to be very carefull.
