These prices were gathered in early August by USDA. Figures followed by (D) are delivered prices. All others are at the farm. Cube and pellet prices are bulk unless otherwise indicated.

WOW! I wonder if they meant August of last year??? I live in northern CA and the CHEAPEST hay I've found was $200/ton and I had to pick it up! The Oregon prices were even worse...I wonder where they are getting their info from, sure doesn't seem accurate!

USDA prices aren't very accurate. They are more of a snap-shot of who they are asking but don't take into account local markets or swings within the market week to week.

Boy... I wonder if they WERE talking 2006!!
Here in the Alfalfa growing area of Calif, I am paying about $200.00 a ton at the field, and since I feed 4-way grain hay as well, that is $230 a ton!!
Delivery would add about $50 dollars and most growers won't deliver less than 156 bales which is a truck load. With only two horses, and a very small storage area, I can only handle about 80 bales. These ARE 110 lb, 3 string bales and are the top quality, but the cost is horrible. I heard from a gal I talked to in Los Angeles, she paid $280 per ton!! and not the best quality either! She is buying from a grower about 60 miles away to even get a decent price, she has 8 horses and needs to keep a good amout around.
