Dwight will probably give you more info soon.  We loved it.  The trails were well maintained, not a lot of rocks (but some), good creek crossings (don't know how much watre is there right now)  but the riding was very nice.  Where are you staying/camping?

I just did a search for Mammoth Cave on this forum and found the following from this spring

The new horse camp at Mammouth Cave  is the D Bar K.  http://www.dbarkhorsecamp.com/ .  10 electric sites, primitive sites, 12x12 panel pens, 12 covered stalls, picket lines, shower and bathroom facilities and dump station in the spring 2007.  It is just past the Lincoln Trailhead on the right.  502-348-2031.

Hi Dixie!  Mammoth Cave has some great riding.  We are only an hour away and ride there often.  Our favorite trail is the Wet Prong Loop.  It has lots of creek crossings, even during the dry spells.  Also the Good Springs trail is nice this time of year.  McCoy Hollow/First Creek is a little more challenging and rocky.  Raymer Hollow is one of my favorite rides in the early spring and late fall.  This time of year, however, the blackberry brambles tend to take it over.  So unless you wear body armor, you get scratched up.

Be prepared for horse/deer flies.  They get pretty bad there.

The weather looks good for this weekend.  Clear skies and temps in the 80s.

Have fun and take lots of pictures!!

RIDE ON!

We love Mammoth Cave.  We camp in the Maple Springs Campground and even though they are primitive sites they are great.  Very spacious and well maintained with permanent picket poles---you have to supply the rope.  The "portapotties" are of the permanent type and very good size.

The trails are very nice and with all the tree cover they are almost always cool.

Be aware, horse trailers are no longer permitted to use the Green River Ferry.

Happy Trails,

JacciB

I'm trying to find out the name of the place we're staying from what I've heard there's not much shade you're pretty much out in a field and the bathrooms are in the barn. Don't know if that rings a bell to anyone, but thats all I have right now. I really appreciate all the info maybe I can get the name of the place we're staying at and get some info on it. Thanks.

There are two camps at MC.  Double J Stables has been there for years.  D bar K just opened recently.  It sounds like you are describing Double J.  Their bath is in the barn and the electric sites are mostly in the sun.  They put the primitive sites in the shade thinking that if you needed electicity, then you probably have AC.

There is one trail leading out of camp which puts you on "Collie Ridge".  That will connect with most any trail you want to ride.  You'll just have to backtrack Collie Ridge when returning to camp.  Collie Ridge is basically an old roadbed that will take you to an intersection where you can go a couple different directions off into the woods.

RIDE ON!

The riding was great some of the best trails we've been on in a long time. However I didn't like the stalls two of my horses ended up getting cuts in the junky barn, but other than that we had a great time.

I'm going there this weekend!  Can you give me any info on what the trails are like?  Were there lots of elevation changes and rocks?  I've read that the trails are pretty flat but looking at pictures on line, it seems they may have some hills.

I'm sorry to hear that your horses were hurt.  I hope they heal quickly.

The trails do have some hills nothing bad, but I live in the mountains so they were pretty tame to me maybe not others. The trails were great though well kept lots of scenery very nice. If the campground were as nice as the trails it would have been great, but nothing is perfect. We had a great time and rode some great trails so I can't complain too much. Then again I'm comparing the campground to Big South Fork so it may not be as bad as I think it was. Either way you'll enjoy the riding. Let me know what you think about it.

Dixie, I see you mentioned Big South Fork.  What about trails there, lots of elevations or pretty flat?  I am used to riding in Shawnee--lots of rocks and steep inclines.  We like a challenge.

I just got back from an endurance ride @ BSF.  I stayed at the Bandy Creek campground which is very nice.  The only drawback is that your horse must be stalled across the street.  I don't like being away from my horse!

The trails there are awesome.  There is a lot of variety so you can choose to stay away from some of the bigger climbs.  Most of the trails are wide, well maintained, and IMO, not too rocky.  In fact, I think they're pretty sandy in places.

There is a new campground at Mammoth Cave.   D bar K horse camp just opened last year.  Hubby rode past it last weekend and said it looks very nice.  New barn and modern bath house.    The owner of Double J is wanting to move back north and, unfortunately, has let things get run down.   Perhaps a little competition will force Double J to make some improvements.

RIDE ON!

rose,
South Fork has a little for everyone. There are easy and difficult trials so you can pick what you prefer. I would recommend Honey Creek as a place to stay nice campground, nice barns, nice owners, and some of the best sites to see a south fork.
