I have a yearling that has a pattern all over her neck. They're not colics/whirls of any sort but just different "laying" of larger patches of hair. It has a velvety/wet look with different shading within the same coat color. What is it called? Also, does a dun have to have a prominant stripe down its back? This yearling's body color is like that of peanut butter. Her stripe is faint and of the same coat color only a little darker. It isn't prominant but she has one. She's registered as a bay (her winter coat looks "normal bay".) She also has alot red and blonde in her black mane and tail. Her points on her legs are coming through black. Her sire is a dun and her dam is a buckskin..............curious.

Cant answer to that and don't be too alarmed but if this is something new you may want to check for metabolic disorders ( Cushings, IR, etc.). I was just in MI 2weeks ago I know it has been dry there in places so the grass is stressed and high in sugar. Worth inquiring with your vet and as always www.safergrass.org.Rich.

Was she born with this?   Do you have any pictures?

My appy filly was a dark bay when she was born, but has now shed almost all her baby fuzz and it looks like she will be a blue roan like her sire.  It was a HUGE color change and really shocked me when I got back from vacation to see her.   If it wasn't for the white patterns on her neck and legs I would have thought someone switched foals on me.

Cushing's is an older horse disease. I bought her last fall so her winter coat was already coming in to a degree. This spring it became noticable after she shed out. Can you see the pattern on her neck/upper shoulder? Please excuse her light ribbing. She's growing like a weed and I'd rather have a little rib than too much weight on her during this period. Her dam is the buckskin and her sire is the dun.
