Hi all,

I am in the market for a used trailer and would like to know specifically what to look for when inspecting them.  Suggestions?

Are you showing?  Trail riding?  Weekend camping?  Long trips - short trips?  We need more info.

RIDE ON!

When looking at used trailers, After chosing the features you want ... including if it fits your tow vehicle, the next important feature is condition!

Like real estate... Condition! Condition! Condition!

The floor is the usual deciding factor regardless of age.  A 2 year old trailer can be rotted worse than a well cared for 20 year trailer.

Body rust and structure are the next big condition issues.

Then interior function...

Last the minor dents and dings that horses inflict on everything around them.

Things, that, if they fail, get you or your horse killed.  Floor, floor supports, running gear, hitch.  Then, bent axle or frame, and any metal protrusion to cut a horse.  Spare tire& wheel?  Tire condition, also easily replaced.

Then, lights, brakes, wiring, etc.

Make sure that you open all of the windows and doors.  I know of a trailer company that use to put drop down windows  (with wood on the inside) on their trailers.  I go through them with a fine tooth comb.  I just ordered a 4-Star and I will go over it also.

I guess you should approach this just as if you'd check out anything else you might buy used. Make sure things that should light, up light up. If it should close, check to see that it does. Obviously, being used, you'll find somethings show signs of wear or are dinged. Only you can determine if its something you can or can't live with. I'd certainly check the floors ( under the mats), see that breaks are working and overall if its in good shape.

Important to check the floor - PULL THE MATS UP and look carefully. If you can possibly do so, look underneath. Not just flooring but wiring, cables struts, etc. Look for rust on any steel parts, particularly frame members. If the frame is rusty, you may have major repairs to do.
