I probably just need some hand-holding here, but tried 3x last year to AI mare, no baby on board. Two vets found nothing wrong with her, say that some mares, maiden mares particularly, just settle better under live cover. There is nothing physically wrong with this mare, stallion has settled every other mare. What am I doing wrong???? How can I help Scarlett the harlot become Myrtle the Fertile? Other than the late baby issue, how long should I try? I really believe I have a nice mare/stud cross and am trying to raise my next show horse. Getting mighty discouraged though. Your thoughts?

Sometimes the mare & stallion just don't mix. My friend had this problem last year. Couldn't get the mare to settle with one stallion, but settled with the other, both AI. She had bred 2 other horses to the first stallion at the same time, so it wasn't the stallion. The mare had a nice colt in early May. Ask the stallion owner if they will try live cover.

Good Luck,
Betty

Guess I didn't go far enough in my story. Last year, Stallion #1, AI. This year, different stallion, the real deal. Sounds like my problem is not uncommon though.

My vet recommends Regumate after breeding a mare that has trouble getting or staying bred.  They have sold me on the idea, since I have a mare who does breed, but slips the foal in the first several months.  I have her palpated, and ultra sound"ed", 15 to 17 days after breeding, then lose the foal within the next few months.  This has happened twice.  Clean uterus, no infection blah blah blah.  They tell me the Regumate "usually" holds them in foal.  We will see

Please keep us updated on this. Have never heard of using Regumate for that. In fact, I assumed it would cause them to abort.

Edit: someone asked age of mare; she's 9

Its used to boost hormones. Can't spell it projustron/spelling.But any way it can be used for the first 40 days or so.There is a simple test(by blood, about a $25.00 test)) to see if mare is making proper amount. If she is there is no point in continued usage. I'm TRYING to breed a mare on FROZEN semen now.Last two days and did this 3 weeks ago also(same mare)

Are you using ultra sound to check follicle size. Checking sprem quality? Is a vet helping you with this? Check and find out what type of extender they are using. There is alot of ?'s that need to be answered to find the problem. The main key to reproduction, is nutrition and an examine.Prostaglandin is a hormaone that cause the cl to regress, and progesterone prolongs the cl. Regumate is an progesterone drug be careful how you use it.

Yes to all. This time is live cover so no extender. She's due to come in again by this weekend, am really keeping my fingers crossed. Last year used lutein, this year no drugs, just natural. Mare is three hours away and another hour and a half back to the nearest equine vet, so other than the initial ultrasound to determine follicle size we've just prayed. Who knew it could be this difficult? Thanks for all your advice and support.

Maybe baby. At day 22 she is still slapping his sassy face-dare I hope? She is like clockwork, in on day 20 and ready to say Hey, sailor! So...thanks for everyone's good advice. Hope to be writing back to say "BABY ON BOARD".
