When eating oats and grain my horse will sometimes cough.  No fever or nasal drainage.  Would putting vegetible oil / water on the oats help to reduce his cough or just leave it alone?

Your horse may be reacting to dust.  Try putting water on the feed or rinsing the feed before feeding and see if that stops the coughing.  Good luck.

It may help if you don't already feed the grain and hay on the ground this will help them keep the throat drained a little better.

I agree with Rose's post: we had a hanovarian gelding that was imported from Germany who was allergic to EVERYTHING - including dust - just a bit of water (especially on oats - they're terribly dusty) helps out a lot. Also, if your horse really dives into his feed, it may benefit him to put some rocks or something to slow him down a bit. Moving the level of the feed pan may also produce good results, but I do think the water is your best bet. I would stay away from the oil since it spoils so easily - just my opinion

Good Luck!

We have been wetting his grain down and the coughing has gone away. (must be the dust) He does love his grain.  As soon as you come into the barn in the morning he is waiting by the feeder anxious for you to put the grain in.

Kinda reminds me of the dogs jumping up and down as you are putting the bowl down.
