I am looking to buy my first trailer and I am a bit overwhelmed. I am driving an Acura MDX. Is there a 2 horse trailer that my SUV can pull with my two 16.2 hand horses inside or am I dreaming? The Acura website says that my vehicle has a 4500 lb towing capacity. Any thoughts?

Sorry to say, but I think you may be dreaming. 16.2 hand horses weigh a minimum of 1100 pounds. 2 saddles, bridles and grooming equiment (I'm going english here since they are the lightest) you at a minimum of 100 pounds. You are already at a minimum of 2300 pounds. So far that leaves you at 2200 for the max weight of your trailer. Now if you do not have anything else in your truck or trailer, you could probably haul them carefully. This means no buckets, hay/grain, water, extra passengers or cargo. The trailer would probably have to be your standard trailer...NOT extra tall, wide or long and no dressing room. You have large horses to trailer, you will probably need a sightly bigger than average trailer. I'm not saying it's impossible to do, but it may be hard to find the right trailer.

From what I have seen these specifications (i.e. towing capacity) tend to push the enevelope. I would suggest that they are dealing with ideal conditions when they get their capacity measurements. Towing horses in bad conditions is dangerous, and ideally you don't do it, that being said sometimes what starts out as a good day can turn bad. I have seen a trailer pull a truck down a icy hill, not good. You need more power and longer wheel base to pull the horses your talking about in a dafe manner. I would use 75% of maximum as a rule "just a guess".

I have to agree with the other posts. With 2 horses that are 16.2H, you almost need the extra height of a warmblood trailer and the horses alone will weigh close to 2300 lbs. My first trailer was a 2H BP straight load, 7" tall, with under manger storage (no DR), and it weighed about 2,700 lbs. That puts you at almost 5,000 lbs with no tack, no nothing. And having been to Colorado, you have just a few hills out there to climb which will put more strain on your tow vehicle. I always tend to err on the cautious side because I am carrying precious cargo - I definitely think you need more vehicle to pull horses safely.

Go with the Brenderup trailer. You can pull a trailer with your Acura. I am a dealer, but we are located in Wisconsin so obviously no help to you. If your Acura can pull 4500 pounds then it is rated for a tongue weight of at least 450 pounds. The heaviest Brenderup is 2150 pounds with a tongue weight of 250 pounds. Even with your horses in there the tongue weight doesn't change. The horses being 1000 pounds each will bring you to 4150, but the tongue weight is 250. Now if you don't need a dressing room and a large tack area, then you can get th eRoyal model which is 1950 with a tongue weight of 175 pounds loaded. You have plenty of vehicle for the Brenderup trailer. Good Luck and don't let anyone who doesn't own a Brendeurp tell you differently. They are going by the big American standards. The American trailer being 2500 pounds has a minimum tongue weight of 250 pounds and it gets heavier the more when you put your horses in there. We took a measuring tape when we hooked up the trailer to the wagon and we measured 18" from the ball to the ground. We put our horses in the trailer and our saddles in the tack compartment and we measured again. it was insignificant. There wasn't a measurable amount of difference. it didn't move to the next mark. Call Brenderup at 800-745-1306 and ask for literature on the trailers. They will send you the literature and a DVD to watch. YOu can have an engineer watch it if you want to. In fact I have a couple of engineers who own the Brenderup trailer. Have a safe and great Holiday season.

I have a Acura MDX and pull a Brenderup Baron TC with no problems. You will have to have the Acura or Honda dealer install the trailer towing package on your MDX.Sherry

And for those who click on this for opinions, its not just the weight to pull, stop, but also the wheelbase length. Some of those SUV's are way to short in my opinion to safely tow a horse trailer. Even a Brenderup

So the end of the story is...
I ended up buying a Brenderup back in 2005 and have pulled it with my Acura MDX ever since. Works great, no problems, love it! I have used the hell out of it and have warmbloods and thoroughbreds.
Now that my two young daughters are riding and I need to haul 3 horses regularly I bought a Ford one ton truck and a four horse 4 Star trailer. I still use the Acura and the Brenderup any time I can, for running a horse to the vet or when it's just me going somewhere. Obviously I love not using so much fuel and the Brenderup is very easy to pull.

Oh wow. That is an awesome ending to the story because I am seriously considering buying a Brenderup to be pulled by my 2007 Acura MDX. Did you get the Brenderup Royal TC with a tack room, that weighs 1950? My 17.1 Dutch warmblood mare weighs about 1400 lbs and since it's a 2 horse Brenderup trailer I'm looking at, I would love to pull 2 horses...you know...take a buddy along to shows. The 2007 MDX can pull 5000 lbs, of course the extra cooling for towing and all, tongue at 250 (I think) and has a wheel base length of 108.3 inches.And yes, I am someone who was just checking this for advice, and searching for whether or not a Brenderup could be towed with my Acura. I wasn't meaning to continue such an old thread but what you all were saying was so relevant to my questions that I had to respond (and also to let anyone else know about the Viagra thing--ugh!).So you haven't had any problems with towing the Brenderup trailer with the MDX at all and you love it?So glad you responded.Shawn

I know this is a old discussion but I am looking in to a brenderup and I have a MDX. I have a Quarter Horse and he is smaller than the ones you haul but he moves around alot. Do you have problems with stability? I am not 100% convinced that I can tow horses with my MDX i have pulled a flat bed with hay and it seemed alright. But that is dead weight. I see your in CO how does it do with the hills? I would not be mountain driving but CO has many hills.

Brenderup is no longer supported in the US, you have to find a repair facility that will work on them, like Rolling M trailers in Jarrell, Texas.
