We have a KW with a CAT engine. If you have a CAT or Cummins engine with issues, or pull with a motorhome, we found the most awesome retired Master mechanic on the planet who saved us about $4,000. last week. Sadly, if you take your rig to a shop, they usually soak you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. We got relief when we hooked up with an honest person who simply scanned it and told us we needed a sensor.?.instead of a new HEUI, or Turbocharger.

Any shop that would fraudulently tell you to buy a new turbo vs just a sensor replacement...needs to be reported....:(

I have a Freightliner C112 with a CAT C12, and an International 4900 with at DT466, an one of the things I love about having big trucks is first they are easier to drive, and secondly I find it much easier and cheaper to get them worked on. But yes there are still places that take advantage of you, however there are far more fair places in my opinion. oh and the large number of mobile truck repair places that come to you is pretty good, although if you have an after hours emergency call you will normally pay through the nose. I broke a fan belt coming over the hill into Salina UT pulling 8 horses at 11:00 pm friday night. I had to walk to get cell service, but when I got someone to come out with a new belt, it cost me 599.99. Sounds like a lot but if i had been in a dually pickup I probably would have to be towed and wait till morning.

I recently had truck trouble with my Peterbilt while on the Natchez Trace in Mississippi. I had to have my truck and trailer towed into a chain mechanic shop in Tupelo, MS that came recommended my several locals. After two weeks and one day with many conversations between us I was told the repairs would be $3900.00 plus labor. I told them that if I was going to spend that kind of money I was going to do it closer to home. I paid $2700.00 to have my truck and trailer towed from their shop across state lines to my local Peterbilt dealer who fixed it in two days for $101.00 plus labor.

I rest my case.... I do know that there are honest people out there, I also know alot of hack mechanics who hang their shingle out and puff a pretty big story about how good they are. In our area, I feel like there are a lot of "Vultures" ready to diagnose before they even hook up the computer and scan it. and, I may be turning into an ole sourpuss.
